Wanted one, couldn't find one, built one...
I needed an extension cab to run my new little Vox AC4TV Mini through and couldn't find one. At least not at a reasonable price.
This here box is made from 18 mm plywood and covered with really sick cream coloured faux ostrich leather. (Couldn't get hold of proper tolex.) The grill cloth is proper vintage Vox cloth.
The speaker is a Celestion G12T-75, out of my Marshall 2X12 cab. As soon as I order and get another speaker for this cab out of the US, this one will go back into the 2X12...
It sounds really cool. Makes that lil Vox sound really big. I think with a speaker that is slightly more "vintage" sounding and brighter, this is going to be a brilliant little setup. But, I'm quite chuffed. It looks retrocool, I think, and sounds even better than I had hoped.
The hardware, like corners, handle and backplate are from Philtron in Pretorius Street, Pta.
The vinyl is from a factory shop in downtown Pta that supplies upholsterers.
The wood and other stuff are from Chamberlains Hardware.
I'm not too sure how much the whole build cost me, since there is still a lot of the sheet of plywood left, as well as vinyl. Should be between R350 and R400 though... and remember, I didn't pay for the speaker.
It took me about ten hours.
Dimensions:
460 mm X 420 mm X 270.
(It's approximately the same size as my Fender Blues Jnr, just slightly deeper.)
Lessons I learnt:
1. Get the supplier to cut the wood for you.
2. Get hold of some right angle clamps! They're brilliant.
3. Use patience...
4. This is also an excuse to buy a rechargable screwdriver, which is a brilliant tool to have.
Finally, huge thanx to Saddle and Nut for helping me source some of the materials!
