  • Fake Gibson experience

I was negotiating for a little electro-acoustic at cash crusaders this morning. I ask to see the Gibson case behind the counter. Turns out a customer returned it because the pickups are fake. So I take a look, Gibson custom case, Slash signature Les Paul with Gibson inlayed into the headstock. So I thought I would pass on some of the "mistakes" I picked up, maybe it will help someone in future.

Custom/historic black cases have gold latches
The guitar has a snug fit in these cases, no room for movement

Mistakes on the guitar itself:
Tuners don't say Gibson, Kluson or grover.
Cavity covers are cream plastic.
Headstock looks like it was spliced on
Tailpiece and bridge looked wrong.

So be careful out there, for a second I thought I may have hit the bargain of the century ?

They do have a nice blonde American tele with hardcase for 9k if anyone is interested.
    Cavity covers are cream plastic.
I wonder if this is because they started with an Epi and modified the headstock? Stupid thing for an actual fake producer to get wrong - not that they really care since they're not catering to a very informed set of marks.
I'd suggest getting the cops in there, but they'd probably confiscate it and sell it on gumtree... :-\

I doubt they would give a sh#t to be honest. When my 335 was ripped off, I actually gave them the address of where it was delived in Jhb and they did nothing.

It has a highly flamed top, so actually looks like the slash sig, and has that tophat motif on the headstock. Who knows, maybe thats what they did.
