Why can't the Jhb crowd get together, but lotsa Gfsa members in CPT can ?

In order not to hijack the Cape Town get- together thread , Ive started a new thread . ? guidothepimmp wrote Shees, it was such a mission organizing a get together up here.. Seems so much easier down there. Begs the question, what we doing wrong? Maybe we need to ask the cpt folk to design some invites for us.. @ Guidothepimmp , its not the actual invite thats the problem imo.... Without any intention to step on toes , this is my opinion . :-\........ By now, one can see that the attendance figures of GFSA members at a TJ's acoustic show for example are continuously limited to about 5 to 8 regulars off GFSA . Even though its been suggested numerous times that many more GFSA members attend , if only as a perfect opportunity to meet each other. The growth of attendance over the past year or so is only one or maybe three more guys attending. The recent get-together number at Gumtree Midrand was about 5 , plus spouses. Those that met were mostly from the metal frat. So the way I see it , the genres up in JHB are not mixing with each other . I don't think most metal fans of GFSA are going to meet other GFSA members at a TJ's acoustic show anytime soon , nor will the acoustic folk be going to meet up at a GFSA metal convention either . UNLESS , as Manfred says . There needs to be common ground to attract the different genres to meet up. Such as gear demos , freebies , boerie rolls , etc from suppliers for example. This is what they are doing right and it could work here as well. I reckon that if Mr. Melfi was to visit Jhb with some of his Two Rock or Swart gear, there would be a fairly good mixed turn out here in JHB too . As would a TOMS demo day for example , where the latest PA gear , Ibanez , Fender , Tokai and Cole Clarke guitars , Roland electronic drums and the Kemper Profiling Amp , amongst other fine gear could be demoed by a couple of decent bands /groups from the different genres. This could work out very well and attract a large turnout of GFSA 'ers to meet each other in the Jhb area. imo 8)

We having a shindig at a local larney jawl, called Minas.
Marimbas - me gonna do 'The final countdown' with them on electric. Then me and my music mentor gonna play some of my stuff on accoustic with some Jembe, Rainstick, Kalimba backing. Might even crank up the Teramin a little. And lots of other greatly talented musos gonna tear it up.
Hope it doesn't piss down.
400 k's down the track aint easy I know.

Sounds excellent. Enjoy it a bunch and have an extra orange juice on the rest of us (can't be too much longer before those orange juices are beers?)

Some thoughts....

1) We have, in fact, had some very successful GFSA get-togethers in Jo'burg. There was the braai/jam in Midrand that Keira organised. There was X-stock. There was the setup workshop arranged by Gearhead and with Andy McGibbon presenting. There was a jam/get-together in a rehearsal studio in Roodepoort that Stratisfear put together. These are well documented on GFSA. So you should take heart - it can be done.

2) TJ's may or may not be your cup of tea, but there is, I think, a lesson to learn here. TJ's, essentially, is a bunch of people who wanted to find a way to get together to play music. They have no physical premises of their own, but they have made it happen. Many of the people involved with TJ's have no professional connection with the music industry. TJ's shows what can be done if people put their mind to it.
