@ Joe, lol, I was being facetious about the invites, thought cpt's was quite clever..
On another note, I agree and disagree with some of the points here.. As a general rule here, and I am generalizing quite strongly, I find the folk here in jhb quite intolerant. Rather than induldge others and maybe broaden the ol horizons, they would rather stick to their own and what they like..
I saw this widely from when we gigged. Friends of other bands would all leave with said band after playing a show leaving the venue with ever dwindling numbers. Same thing with the social scene.
Like Joe and roomysman said in another thread, the threat of looking around and getting moered for it is almost ever present, and I for one don't fancy taking my wife to those types of places, I don't need the ballache or the hassle.
Similarly, the choice of evenings is at times prohibitive, TJ's. For me is that example, I simply cannot do thursdays. It would be awesome to get some gear demo's going and probably worthwhile speaking to Mr. T or other forumites with people in the know..
Averatu, myself, Manno and Frans chatted about organizing a get together with kit where we could talk gear, have a jam, learn a few things, do a techniques workshop which I think is a brilliant idea, but for that we would need forumites with chops and willing to share some ideas to attend, so while for us mere mortals there is draw card, how does on convince the guys with serious chops to come to these things and have a jam, dop, boerie etc?
I'm not sure I can agree with all the above. You seem to try very hard to find a reason why get togethers work in CT but not in Pta/Jhb and then chaulk it down to all sorts of character traits of inhabitants of said cities. I will not for one moment believe that folk in Jhb are "quite intolerant" while the CT guys are exactly the opposite. Friends of other bands leaving after their band has performed is in no way unique to Pta/Jhb. In fact, Jack Flash Junior very recently related an experience where exactly that happened to them, right there, in the middle of Cape Town, the mother of tolerant cities.
Even if we have such polarised tastes in music, I don't see how that should preclude a successful get together either. We all like a proper vleisie on the braai. I've met a number of GFSA'ers and I can honestly say that I enjoyed each one of those meetings. I love being able to put a face to a name and I've found the GFSA folk to be a very pleasant bunch. I've met Joe once and, while I can't even tell you what his exact taste in music is, I remember him as a friendly and pleasant guy.
So I would suggest that you were perhaps just a bit unlucky with your get together and that a set of unplanned circumstances tripped you up a bit. I really don't think you should try too hard analysing the character traits of the average Jo'burger or Pretorian in search of answers.
One thing I could point out perhaps, the whole putting together of this get together seemed to be way more convoluted than it needs to be. There were all sorts of polls and pre-thread threads to discuss the best approach and date. I don't know, I think the CT guys had the right idea of just picking a date and venue and sending the general invite.
