Ok, so I have a Laney LV200 amp and it has major issues with pots that scratces, I have tried the elecronic spray you get, and it only works a while then it scratches so much I rather pay on my acoustic.
Ok, so I gather I need to replace the pots, but rather than take it in to the local music shop for repair I thought it might be a good idea to do it myself...the amp is not under warranty anyway, has no sentimental value so if I break it then I hopefully learned something.

and with this all I hope to learn a bit regarding amps and maybe how to build my own valve amp...it may take long but it can be a fun and fruitfull experience at least.

So what do you guys recommend with regards to the amp repair? also, if I build my own valve amp, what wattage should it be and where in SA can I order a kit maybe to build my own? Or even just the rough estimate of parts prices since I can build my own cab...

Thanks in advance for any advice ?

You live in the same town (?) as Bottledtone, you should go and speak to him about building amps. The wattage will depend on how much clean headroom you need. If you need lots, 40 watt max, if you want amp drive, don't go over 20 watt. Getting a cab made in this country is basically more expensive than the rest of the amp parts (and speaker) so if you can build your own the rest won't be very expensive (Less than R5k for most amps).

If the amp's pots are scratchy and need replacing, you can do that yourself, just keep in mind that valve amps can kill even when they're off and you need to know how to check whether the filter capacitors are discharged, and to discharge them (not through your body) if they are charged. Its a dangerous thing to do if you are in any way unsure of what to do.

I would go and speak to bottledtone first.

I have to agree with EZ always a good thing to be careful with valve amps, but don't let that deter you from going for it though. can't quite remember but I think you can get kits through Bottledtone? As for the pots of the Laney they might be a slight challenge to change though (Thats if they are anything like the pots in the VC100) as most laney amps use pcb's and the pots will be mounted through hole... If you have soldering know how and some patients then this should be quite fun. You might just have to import the pots, but hopefully you'll find it locally.
