It also is so much easier to play most of the songs, only require acoustic and knowledge of 4 chords ?
Well there's a lot of people in country who crack all the old jokes like "there's no money past the 5th fret" or talk about "the dusty end of the neck" ?
But there's a lot of very fine players. Guys like Darrell Scott or Tim O'Brien or Ricky Skaggs (to name but three out of many) who are very fine players, often on multiple instruments. From there you might try a bit of Martin Simpson who sort of has a foot on each side of the Atlantic, works in that story-telling mode and is a fabulous player on guitar, slide guitar, lap steel and banjo and in several styles.
