I'm interested to see what bands or musicians you discovered this year. I found 2 that really stick out. Both do covers of pop songs but really take them to another level.
Project RNL also does a lot of original material with Jordan Rudess. Here are the 2 bands I found this year. Could also be well known guys that you just fell in love with this year.

Woaw. Just took a listen. That is some intense stuff.

For me it's Tinariwen. It was like a bolt from the blue the first time I heard them (on Joe Boyd's Lucky 13 show).
Fab band. Potent, thrilling, sound like they're plugged into something very ancient and very passionate.

The album 'Rossz csillag alatt született' especially.

Mostly metal stuff... okay only metal stuff - I'm sure the grampas guitar players here will teach us some culture in time! ?
Lost soul from Poland and thrashy black band called Skeletonwitch. Not new bands at all but as for me new discoveries. Ulcerate from NZ also a band I will be keeping an eye on.
Sadly, nothing local, metalwise that is...

I'm getting old.... :'( Tried to get into bands like the Black Keys, Alterbridge and and The Dead Weather, I really did. Just didn't happen for me.
Instead I went all honky tonk and retro. Go figure...
Favourites "new" artsists for the year: Brad Paisley, The Little Willies, Kid Rock and Tom Waits. CCR and The Black Crowes also got some serious playtime. But they're rediscoveries than anything else. Just enjoying them more now that my Golden Years seem to be creeping up on me ?

Had a strange year musically. Concentrated more on Acoustic and Folk music.
Amazing thing is that you follow the path of one musician and suddenly find three or four other musicians through that connection.
First up would have to be Martin Simpson, has such an incredible touch on acoustic, does not resort to widdly moments to show that he can play the guitar.
Through Martin Simpson, I discovered June Tabor, an incredible voice and pleased to hear old Tom Howden at TJ's doing some of her catalog.
My Jazz side would be John Scofield, I have tried many years before to understand him but finally did with his 2011 release.
Metal - Opeth , just blows me away and even better that they are resorting to normal vocals
Conrad has also piqued my interest with various Classical and Flamenco players.
Most probably more if I wasn't so darn tired

- quite an interesting blend of acoustic folk with a touch of late 60's and early 70's and some great vocal harmony, can be a bit dark, especially their latest offering but still good stuff.
IceCreamMan
Dan Patlansky was my lil discovery of the year ...i had seen him over the years but never focussed ....

Both of mine came as a result of activity on this forum.
Amy LaVere - thanks to SingeMonkey
Richard Thompson - thanks to X-Rated Bob

I tend to flip flop through new discoveries pretty quickly, but right now I have two entries from the electronic world the first being the crazy jazz/electronic hybrid that is Jaga Jazzist:
=
=
The other being the trippy/mind blowing atmospheric stuff from Trifonic:
=
The more relaxed part of me has also really been enjoying the new Cloudkicker Album "Let Yourself Be Huge", it's just amazing laid back textural stuff ?
=
On the more progressive side I discovered and got into the band Scale the Summit, very awesome composition and writing ?
=
Other than that I've really been enjoying new releases by Dream Theater, Al Di Meola, The Aristocrats and Animals As Leaders but I knew of all these artists and bands before 2011 so I guess they don't really count, I do however wake up everyday to this set as my alarm tone:

That's all I can think of for now...Still it's been a good year musically ?

I forgot about Imelda May and I discovered her by discovering her bassist Al Gare who plays a mean double bass

Loved that. Very Taylor/Richards Ya Ya's style lead guitar going on in the background.
