  • When should you consider selling your rarely used gear?

As the topic title states:

I have the Tanglewood TW28CLN Acoustic Guitar, and recently bought a hard case to protect her!
Problem is though, i hardly use her! So she's still in top condition!

At this moment, i could really use a Boss Fender FRV-1 Reverb Pedal, Zoom G3, or cash, more than the acoustic!
Which also hasnt seen any play in at least 5 months!!!

Should i sell her??
Coz thats what im considering at this moment!

If you were in this predicament, what would you do?
well unless money is not an issue..... ?

then i believe in selling unused gear to finance gear i would use........ cos unless we talking a fender or gibson guitar or amp or some "collectable" item ....... then i'd keep it cos replacing it would be costly and it will appreciate in value .......however most gear is NOT collectable and can be replaced easily if you want it again ...

so yes if it's a tanglewood i would sell it if i needed something else and deemed it more important

    good luck

I presume the Tanglewood is a nice sounding guitar with a good action...? If so, rather keep it and save up for a pedal or two.
I'm with Vic. If you bought her new, plus the case new, then you will take a serious markdown should you sell. Rather save up some and be alert for bargains when they pop up.
Then again, if there's an itch that's driving you mad, you gotta somehow scratch it hey.... Close your eyes, forget about common sense and sell her.
          not an itch as such...

im just struggling to justify keeping her as i have hardly played her!
i even still have the original box!!!
She sounds very good, and yes, a nice action too!

That's what makes me think i should keep her... but i dont know anymore!

I even have a whole bunch of things that would go into the sale, just centred around her, because again, useless having something if you dont use it hey?!

I'll see how the response is if i put her up for sale!!
Only you can decide that Norman.
But I am in total agreement with Keira, Vic and Chris, I would not sell it unless I was desperate.
And do you desperately need the pedal etc? If the answer is no, then there's your answer.
Personally, I HATE selling any of my stuff, no matter how rarely I play/use it ..... it's like family, I love 'em too much, otherwise I would not have bought it in the first place. But then you may not have that same sense of "emotional bond" with your gear......please don't misinterpret what I say .....
              You're going to lose money.
i realise that... but i think im gonna take a chance!!
Do you have another acoustic guitar in the house?

Personally I cannot go to long playing an electric guitar before i feel the urge to strum a few songs on an acoustic. Depends on the mood I am in. They also come in handy for song writing.

I could not live without my Takamine even if I go a couple of weeks ignoring her.

But then again you could always buy another acoustic later on.
i was at the place where I wouldnt sell kit because I was attached to it and thought I'll play iteventually.

Then somehing ( i dont know what) changed, where I decided t get rid of half the kit Ihad.

Now all i have are guitars that are NOT easy tocome by ordinarily in RSA.

I have developed a nicheof the style and guitar that I like and I keep those.

So, its basically your call, but while tanglewoodis a nice fiddle, its notparticularly difficult to find another, so I wouldnt have a problem in despatching it, cos f I got nostalgic, could prob find another relatively easily.
                      Hey Norm,
The general rule I have is to sell musical equipment to buy more musical equipment, so I keep it in the family so to speak...
however, this is your only acoustic axe, so I guarantee in time to come you'll probably decide to buy another acoustic..but ultimately the choice is yours.
Its a damn fine guitar and if you put it out there at a good price I'm sure it will be snapped up.
Maybe in time... But at this moment, there are more pressing matters than guitar gear!
Change in my medical aid for one, non payment of work from a company for another...
So while i'd like a pedal now, its more the medium term goal ?

anyhows, its up in the classifieds, and i worked out that its almost R1500 in accessories! if not more actually! so yeah, lets hope she goes to a good home!

Then I am totally confused why you wanted outside opinions in the first place...... you had already decided .... ???
Good luck and all the best hey.
my 3 1/2 cents would be that you try to trade it out to get what you what, reasoning is that vary rarely will you get your money back in a direct sell, it is after all now second hand.

                              bet of luck

Okay, let me try reply and hope this stupid laptop doesnt go blue screen on me again >☹

I have been toying with the idea of selling her for a while, and i thought about it like this:
I put it in the classifieds, if she sells, then i hope she goes to a good home!
If she doesnt, i havent made a loss and she stays!
So that will then be my deciding factor! Its probably stupid, but i really do feel bad not playing her and all!
Especially since i got the Albion, she's just stayed in her case!
Maybe its stupid reasoning.. i just think its right to let her go to a good home where she'll be played more ?
                                  5 days later
