Fish-Eagle Hope all had an awesome long weekend and a great festive season so far!! Ok, just a few notes before posting the last picks... These show the end results as it looks like at this stage, I have a few decisions to make, like am I going to paint her or take off the protective woods sealer (I had to put it on cause in the last heatwave the wood started to dry too fast and started showing small cracks) and carve even more detail and then put on a protective finish at the end... Also take note that I have decided to put on better dome knobs than the elchipo bell knobs that is currently on it. Well here they are, hope you enjoy! May you all have a Merry Christmas and Awesome New Year!! ?
domhatch you know, it's funny how a guitar you would never pick up and play yourself takes on a whole new light when you know the story behind it. this is a work of art and a labour of love. it's beautiful. can't wait to see it finished! dh
Fish-Eagle Hi all, Thank you for all the great replies so far!! Well after putting a lot of thought in to it I have decided to go the extra carving route and put in a lot more detail on the eagle, going to stain the wood darker and then give her a good clear coat. So hang around will keep on posting as this comes along!
Fish-Eagle have fun sanding and buffing Tongue He he was thinking about that too!! Maybe do a mat finish???
flatfourfan wow.........kudos to you. Any idea on what the final weight will be? That headstock compliments the body perfectly.
psyx woah! This truly is a work of art! When you're done you should upload a vid or a sound recording!
Fish-Eagle Hey guys! Thanks for all the thumbs up so far!! Hope you all are having a great new year so far!! Ok so here are the first new pics for the year Enjoy!! Sanded off the sealer... Added some more definition to the Eagle's face... Added some details to the Body... And some more on the head and body...
Neon-Gecko Looking good Fish Eagle. Just remember to reseal it again or you could end up with air-cracks in the timber again! >☹

Gearhead Let me get this straight: you need sealant otherwise the wood cracks. You use (as far as I can tell) Oak for the body, why do you and why have you not taken a piece that has been dried properly? I don't mean to be negative, I'm just curious why you'd go through all this trouble for a guitar that might not sound so nice (never heard of Oak guitars) or be unstable (there is only so much you can achieve by sealant unless you go for a good few layers of epoxy). Maybe I'm seeing it wrong and you've got funny looking Ash there, but then why worry about cracking?

Maybe I'm seeing it wrong and you've got funny looking Ash there, but then why worry about cracking? Well Gearhead, mainly because this was my first try at doing it ? So yes I have made some erm ok lots of mistakes and learnt a whole heap of stuff!! But by the time the cracks came I had already put in a lot of hours in time into the project. So Neon Gecko advised me to seal the oak off with sealant to prevent the project from cracking further until the time I had decided what my plan was (Airbrushing, tinted clear coat or as I am doing now carving sealing and let be...) Well the biggest part of the project was having fun and that I definitely have had!! ? O yea on the Oak Guitar part http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Special but this is not a full oak guitar... So mine is basically an experiment of "Passion" as I love all the aspects of doing this and hopefully we will all, including me... soon find out what the result is...
Fish-Eagle ...as long as you don't get disappointed and stop there! Cheesy No chance!! Having toooo much fun!! oom Neon now, sheesh now I'm starting to feel old, ta mate... Cheesy Sorry Neon!! You are far from old and do great stuff with them guitars!! ?
Nitebob I would advise (and I have by no-means any experience in building guitars, I only speak about what I was told by builders) If you can get away with just oiling it up (not if you're airbrushing) do so, if you're coating, I would use a matt finish. Resonance is better. Ernie Amos builds 'Selah guitars' (nobody's heard of them) he has a strat he made out of raw wood, didn't even oil it. Produced excellent sound though...Just my penny's worth
