  • Blackie Swart...wow, the man can play!

I was at the opening of Blackie Swart's new bigger music store, Bler Musiek, in Hartebeespoort last week Thursday evening. I was expecting Liewe Lulu, but what we got was some really skilful and tasteful guitar playing with seriously good tone. Very little singing, lots of great blues, rockabilly and hard rock licks. He played a song on a cheap Cort Nylon and made that guitar sing as well - possibly the most impressive bit of playing. The band was tight (his son on drums) and the man himself just ripped on guitar. Never knew he could play like that. They played 5 good songs for a very appreciative and decently sized audience (all sitting/ standing further back in the room so out of picture). Sorry for the cell phone pics.

Blackie played through this board running through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe as far as I could see. Even a boutique pedal snob like me has to admit his tone was killer despite all the non-boutique pedals.

With his Michael Kelly guitar. Think he is possibly an endorsee as he was singing their praises. The guy from Michael Kelly was there as well. Nice guy and very nice guitars.

Playing a G&L Tribute ASAT Classic. No, he is not an endorsee. Just what he chose to jam with on a whim.

Dozi and his wife in front on the left.

Tar me and feather me completely and pleasantly surprised. ??? Blackie is a fantastic guitar player. 8) And he has a pretty cool store.

Anyone had a similarly surprising experience when not expecting much? I had a similar experience with Mark Beling a few years ago when I was expecting Build me up Buttercup and got a guitar playing and tonal masterclass instead.
Yeah, Mark is a fantastic player and a real cool guy. One of the solo's on some others guy album (not mentioning whose) was written for me to "get right"... easy enough after a few tries, but I called him a bastard in jest anyway. I loved playing on his Brian Setzer sig guitar... frikkin awesome sound that thing had. Blackie is a helluva player too. Gerrie Pansegrouw would be my other local hero. Not famous or very well known, but one mofo of a player. He can rip it like Malmsteen on speed... but its his country that made my jaw drop... wooooow. We traded licks at one of the guitarfests... was awesome. Just sitting and jamming for about three or four hours while the "stars" were jamming up on stage. Called it a day when Mauritz played... fair enough ?
