After nearly picking one up on Gumtree over the weekend, I now have GAS for a Beatle bass - anyone got a Hofner copy that they're keen on selling?
Long shot... Beatle bass
If you're willing to wait a while, you can PM Lance and ask him to get order you one of these with his next Tokai order:

So no. Not a long shot at all. ?

Why get the copy when you can get the original ?
I saw one at Lovemore Music Pretoria yesterday! Not sure the price, but give them a call 012 665 2029/1561

Thanks all - budget >
is the main thing... the one I almost got was R1800 so the one Kiera mentioned might be worth a look. That Tokia is a beaut, as well as the one at Hugh's...

See that's what I call an original.Vic wrote: and here's an original from 1967 (at Hugh's Fine Guitars)

Sorry Giggs, twas me. On the upside: the bass is really in terrible condition, you might not have ended up taking it.Giggsy wrote: After nearly picking one up on Gumtree over the weekend
These things used to be so common it wasn't funny. Then someone started buying them up for next to nothing and selling them in the UK to finance a holiday there every year. He did with a dozen guitars a year for over a decade before they started to get hard to find (and local owners got wise).
Gearhead! >Gearhead wrote:Sorry Giggs, twas me. On the upside: the bass is really in terrible condition, you might not have ended up taking it.Giggsy wrote: After nearly picking one up on Gumtree over the weekend

? I was after its 'mojo'! Had already placed my order for a new bridge (which I could luckily cancel) and was investingating pickups - tell me, did it come with the dismantled pickup?
It has found its way to me :-[ ...well, actually my wife Ilse. She's started playing bass and the bass Gearhead let her use was simply too heavy and uncomfortable for her. We'll be restoring it next year, but in the meantime, it's perfectly playable through the bridge pup.Giggsy wrote:Gearhead! >Gearhead wrote:Sorry Giggs, twas me. Yes, it came with the dismantled neck pup ?
Hope you wife enjoys my bass! ?
Is that pup fixable or not even worth looking into? To be honest I would have replaced it but would be interesting to know if it can be repaired. And when are you going to put some pics up?

LOL ...ja, okay ?Giggsy wrote: Hope you wife enjoys my bass! ?
Not sure if the pup can be repaired, I've not even looked at it yet. Will decide towards the end of next year exactly what will be done to it in terms of upgrades etc.Giggsy wrote: Is that pup fixable or not even worth looking into? Not sure whether to post pics now or wait until the restoration begins ?
There was a Beatle Bass at Woodstock. Played by a lady!

Played by Rose Simpson of the (by then expanded) Incredible String Band.
Quite a story. Robin Williamson decided that his girlfriend (Licorice McKechnie, sitting between the two guitarists) was joining the ISB. She had some musical talent and had already added some extra vocals and percussion to the ISB's albums. Mike Heron decided that what was good for the goose was good for the gander and announced that his girlfriend was going to be the bass player.
Trouble is that Rose had no natural aptitude for music and no musical knowledge. This did not deter them though! Mike bought her a bass and would work out the parts and teach them to Rose. Rose would memorise the parts, including slides and vibrato and dynamics, and would execute them flawlessly. When Mike cut his first solo album Rose and Steve Winwood ended up playing together on one song. The bass part was complex and Winwood was amazed to see Rose executing it perfectly take after take. The next day he called up producer Joe Boyd to say that he was recording his own solo album and he wanted Rose to play bass. She knew that she could never do it without Mike teaching and encouraging her so she told Boyd to tell Winwood that she was not available on the suggested dates.
Boyd said that Rose's performance as the ISB's bass player was one of the greatest sustained feats of sheer will that he witnessed.

? bob in my career i met and seen many a bassist that just played what they were shown by someone else and they all did very well..and held down there end till they thought they were getting good enough to NOT get advice and be shown parts and after that the wheels fell off , to their detriment , cos as we know bass is an instrument where one can get by even at the top levels with minimal knowledge or experience as long as they had a good sence of time and kept it simple.........
Now you're just trolling Keira.

I'm listening to the Winwood/Heron/Simpson track right now. I've done this with at least 4 different pairs of headphones or earbuds and I have yet to hear Winwood's part (he's listed on the sleeve as playing organ, and Boyd, who was producing, insists that he played on the track and he must have been otherwise there would be no story to tell), but I can hear Rose's part just fine. It's not in Jaco Pastorius territory, but it's not just simple root and 5th on the beat stuff either. I can see how Winwood would be impressed if she could nail that part repeatedly with no errors.Keira WitherKay wrote: ? bob in my career i met and seen many a bassist that just played what they were shown by someone else and they all did very well..and held down there end till they thought they were getting good enough to NOT get advice and be shown parts and after that the wheels fell off , to their detriment , cos as we know bass is an instrument where one can get by even at the top levels with minimal knowledge or experience as long as they had a good sence of time and kept it simple.........
After she left the ISB she never played again. She surfaced years later as the Mayoress of Aberystwyth.
That somehow seems perfectly appropriate.X-rated Bob wrote:I'm listening to the Winwood/Heron/Simpson track right now.
