May I humbly suggest listening to less Death Metal ?
The whole angst anger hatred thing is a big part of the whole metal vibe afaics.
I can't say I have ever felt happy and inspired after listening to Slayer ... but Peter Tosh, Sonny Rollins and Charles Mingus never fail to put me in a good mood and get me dancing.
The other thing to do would be to learn to play the blues ...
Whenever I feel down I just play the first few notes of Mannish Boy and I know :
Everything, Everything, Everything is gonna be alright this morning !
Cant really comment cos never really been a death metal listener, but did recall this study:
http://www.foxnews.com/health/2011/10/20/metal-music-can-weigh-heavily-on-teens-mental-state/ And yeah, yeah, I know that most "studies" end up with the desired "results" by hook or crook, but thought I'd share anyway.
Well that sounds bogus to me. There's an on-going effort to build a case against metal, trying to "prove" that it's a bad influence on young people.
As I've said on GFSA recently, metal is not the only angry music and it's not the only dark music either.
When that kid ran amuck in Krugersdorp much was made of the fact that he'd been listening to Slipknot. Well what if he'd been known as a reggae fan, or he listened to lots of Sting? Would the papers start building a case that too much Sting makes one murderous? I think not, I think they'd just not even bother with linking music to anything.
They also don't have an explanation for the majority of metal listeners who actually don't go out and murder people.
All this nonsense about metal and what it does reminds me of a "study" done in the UK in the 60s that "proved" that your daughter was more likely to fall pregnant if she listened to the Rolling Stones.
I do think teenagers (and I was one once, you know) ARE more impressionable, but when I was at school we listened to lots of Alice Cooper and didn't get an urge to go down to the mortuary and feel up some corpses. We listened to Lou Reed and didn't get an urge to shoot up.
What these studies come up with is that SOME kids (but not most) will listen to heavy music and do rash things. But, and this particular study acknowledges it, those kids are already depressed and/or marginalised.
Spot the real problem.
