Since my guitar teacher (Meir Taitz) introduced me to Satriani a couple years back, I've been addicted.
Just recently I started revisiting some of his older albums and it's amazing to see how much more you can appreciate once you start understanding what's going on.
The best thing about Satch is how he writes good songs that are ALSO technically interesting.
My favourite song of his out of EVERYTHING I've heard is "I Believe". It's just amazing to me and I'd like to write and perform music like that some day.

Yeah, he is renowned for his legato and tho most of his playing isnt too technical ( except his legato ), he catches your full attention by using superb melodies and catchy riff. A true guitar legend.

What strikes me , is how Satriani can make "messy playing" seem "clean" & "calculated/planned"
The rhythmic qualities he ads to his melodies are in such good taste its not even funny....
Of course when he plays live he will add to this, and he loves his
Harmonic Squeels (wif the whammy bends)
Satch proves that simple melodic structures with intense technical delivery at the right times
becomes a style that most guitarists enjoy listening too, yet this style of music can also truely be appreciated by the masses....

Andrew, you've hit it on the head.
And it's amazing just how often his live performances are "better" than his album recordings. I think, unlike some other guitar gods, he uses his technical abilities to improv on stage (a little) where others just focus on playing it "right".
