Last TJ's open mic night of the year - let's raise a posse

First thing to note: The date is December 1st, it will not be the usual last Thursday of the month. Otherwise it's the usual venue, usual time, usual everything else. I think it would be a fine idea to raise a posse of GFSAers to attend and perform at this open mic night. I am fairly sure that myself and the mighty Squonk will be there. I know that one or two other forumites have been making noises about having a go. Well this is the last chance this year. So you need to bring a guitar that can be plugged into the small sound system used for open mic nights. You don't have to sing - instrumentals are acceptable. You can play covers or your own material or a mix thereof in your 15 minute slot. You have just under a month to prepare. I have an ulterior motive (hahahah!). I will be running a couple more shows for TJ's next year (dates not confirmed yet) and I am always looking to do two things 1) Get a GFSAer on the bill 2) "promote" somebody from open mic nights So let's raise a posse and put our skills on show. Also we can have a beer or two together.

OK... I'll keep an eye on this thread and keep in touch with TJ's (you may be surprised to know that I am not on the committee).

Closer to the time I'll ask all of those who have indicated that you want to play to reconfirm. Then I'll make an arrangement with TJ's.

Remember, you can come along for the beer and the company and to support other GFSAers if you don't want to play. Again I'd encourage you to get there early because the open mic nights at TJ's are usually well attended.

Usually open mic nights are at the Press Club Bar, which is the small room you refer to. A much nicer room in many ways - friendlier, more intimate, more character. If you get the time check out some of the block-mounted front pages hanging on the walls. There's some real history hanging there.

Trigger gallops off at full speed to the nearest town and comes back with a stunning blonde. The Lone Ranger says"No No" and whispers again into Triggers ear. Off Trigger goes again at full speed. Comes back with a gorgeous brunette.

Those of you who want to PLAY please PM me by 20:00 Tuesday next week at the latest. If you have a particular preference about the time you'd like to play then state that. Also let me know where you will be coming from. Unfortunately I can't guarantee that you will get the time slot you ask for.

Those of you want to come and watch, no need to PM me, but I look forward to meeting you on the night and feel free to make your plans known in this thread so that other GFSAers can look out for you.

There will be a bar service and light meals (toasted sandwiches, burgers and the like) will be available.

OK. It's all going to happen next Thursday.

I would urge you all to not arrive too late. The open mic nights at TJ's are growing popularity and sometimes the number of people has exceeded the number of seats. Also the food service slows down as the room gets fuller, so if you want to eat before the show then make an allowance for that. It also allows a little more time for making introductions and having a chat.

I will certainly get there early. I will do my best to secure slots for all GFSAers who PM me to say they want to play, but as I don't have numbers at this stage I can't make promises (nor can TJ's). When you PM me include a cell phone number so that I can call you on the night if need be.

The thorny issue of identification... how about we all wear crocs? No. I didn't think so. It'll work out. There are some pictures posted here. I know Deeftes by sight and my image has appeared on this forum. So there are two points of contact for those who don't know anybody else.

Don't be shy. We don't bite. Even the moderators. I can produce witnesses ?.

Once again, this is a friendly place for those not used to performing to an audience.

Look forward to seeing you all there - whether you are playing or just watching.

I understand the need to feel prepared, but it IS an open mic night, they're not expecting Martin Simpson.

Though Steve Newman turned up once. I think he'd heard that Squonk was going to be playing and wanted to grab some of the limelight.

OK... so I just got a call from TJs and I will be running a show for them early in 2012.

I am a great believer that the open mic nights should be a step up to greater (and no less well paid) things. When I've run shows for TJ's in the past I've always tried to promote people who have looked interesting and reasonably together at open mic nights, so come along and show what you have.
