+1 for Rob Halford in Judas Priest. Its no wonder he was a bit of a fairy though. But talk about high and low notes ?
Squonk
I always forgot Rob Halford, he is a powerful singer.
Can he still do it these days?

Mike Patton - Faith No More
Scuylar Croom - He is Legend
Lisa Gerrard - Dead can Dance

Patton is amazing - I love his stuff with Mr Bungle. About the only other vocalist who is as flexible is Nina Hagen (the Mother of Punk).
Squonk
Didn't Hagen have a daytime job of providing screams for Horror films?

Not that I know, but quite possible - she hosted a few shows on the Sci-Fi channel and did the voiceover for Sally in the German version Nightmare Before Christmas.
She's operatically trained (was considered an opera prodigy at nine) and has an amazing vocal range, covering everything from basso to soprano registers, but often with purposefully odd tonalities, doing everything from demonic voices to . A lot of her earlier stuff is a little weird and punkish (check out Nunsexmonkrock), but some of her rockier albums (like Revolution Ballroom) are amongst my all-time favourite albums. Later output has been very varied stylistically, having done everything from Hare Krishna devotional songs, to 30's blues/Jazz (her mother was a wartime Jazz singer) and collaborations with various dance/DJ artists.
She married a young (I think he was 16) SA guitarist at one point - caused a bit of a stir at the time as she was in her 40s (IIRC).

eddie vedder would get my vote too

Just off the top of my head:
Male
1) Richie Kotzen (plays a damn mean guitar too)
2) Steve Lukather (plays a damn mean guitar too)
3) Bruce Dickinson
4) Bon Jovi (early stuff, he's got a good tonality)
5) Jack Black (would love to hear him in a more serious context)
6) Paul Rodgers
7) Myles Kennedy (Alterbridge)
8) Russel Allan (Symphony-X)
9) Johnny Lang
10) Erick Martin (Mr.Big)
Female
1) Christina Aguilera
2) Ms. Wilson (Heart)
3) Imogen Heap
4) Shirley Manson
5) Theresa Thomason
6) Sandra Nasic

Totally agree with you there. some great vocalists have been mentioned in this thread already. And they are all damn good 'at what they do'. But if i had to choose one, it would have to be Patton. He's got a massive range, and is really versatile. Especially on the 'King for a day, fool for a lifetime' album.

I've heard jack black sing kiss from a rose. Wow it was kickass, found one on youtube but wasn't as good.
Mr mercury is king though. Also a fan of Phil collins for some reason ?

Nice to see that Freddie is up high on everyone's lists. I agree with that though, a great loss to the industry. The music world would have been quite different today it he'd been around a little longer I think.
Tim McIlrath - Rise Against. I battle to sing with the songs - his style is so controlled yet brutal at the same time.
Serj Tankian - System of a Down. His range is scary, not as polished live but good nonetheless.
Greg Graffin - Bad Religion. Not particularly amazing, but I really like his way. The man is punk.
Chester Bennington - Linkin Park.
Jack Black - Tenacious D
umm.... all i can think of now.

Maybe a more "who I like the most" than a bestest list.
Ladies - what I want in a ladies voice is, it must be sexy (but I hate too husky as it sounds pretentious)
-Joni Mitchel
-Stevie Nicks
-Emiko Shiratori
-Enya
Gents - I like strong voice and unique timber
-Bob Dylan (Yes, he can sing really well, e.g. Blood on the tracks, Street legal, Jokerman, etc)
-Bon Jovi
-Eric Clapton
-Tom Waits
-Meatloaf
-Steven Tyler (Aerosmith)
-Sammy Hagar (Van Halen)
I'll just keep on adding to the list as I go on.

Ooooo..
Forgot to add Christina Scabbia (Lacuna coil). Makes me wanna be 16 again.

You should have a listen to Pavlov's Dog, they have an intriguing vocalist David Surkamp .
Try Pampered Menial. You have never heard a vocalist like this.
Heath
now lacuna coil , she's hot and boy what a set of lungs ...

Surkamp is a good vocalist, but you either love or hate his voice. He has a vibrato that sounds like he's driving a tractor over a ploughed field with lead weights tied to his scrotum. ?
