If you had to start a band...what sound would you be after?

Jonny-Two-Shoes

Yeah just as the subject says.

If I had to start a band...hmmmm...actually quite difficult to say or describe.

It would definately have progressive elements which should also allow for some experimenting. My preferred sound for a band I would like to play in would be something like a mix of Porcupine Tree and Riverside. Something that is totally relaxed with a touch of mystery and high emotion. However it should also occasionally allow for a total blow out...frighteningly heavy at times kind of thing.

That would be my favourite sounding band at the moment ?

When we started our 'band' we had a fairly clear cut idea of what sound we were going for. As it turns out we've had to work hard at getting that specific sound to match the chosen genre. The things we ended up composing were nowhere near what we set out to accomplish. Not to say that it was bad, it just wasn't what we were going for in the beginning.

Now we're faced with either working harder to get that sound or we have to embrace what comes naturally (which so happens to be rock ballads ☹)

I think this mainly stems from what the members as individuals accredit their influences to.

Dean is hooked on Seether and Trivium type stuff while MJ is into Blink182, Cold and Three Days Grace. I like my Rise Against and punk but also thoroughly enjoy country / folk type music but our Jason insists on playing speed metal, double bass, drums.

The common denominator is the chilled, emotional power ballad stuff...

If I had to start a band I would like a mix of Dirty Blues with some Stoner Rock and Roll and here and there a spice of 80’s synth’s.
I hope this makes sense… 8)

I’m actually playing Bass for a Progressive Rock band at the moment and the funny thing is they asked me the other day what type of sound am I looking for in a band and couldn’t give them an answer..

Heath

i would have to say a decent mix of blues and melodic rock

FatBoy

A rocking country blues sound!

Squonk

Celtic/metal/afrikaans/gospel

But I dont think I would have much of a fan base!

Porcupine Tree meets Rush with a touch of the Beatles

LMinnie

blues rock...see Allanah Myles..Black Velvet

If I had a choice I would like to do something of a cross between Pink Floyd (Dark side to Final cut era) crossed with Don Davis & Hans Zimmer. I love Kamalot and especially Lacuna Coil, who strive for a similar vibe in their music, but with a lot less people in the band than Don Davis would normally use.

Explorerlover

Pink floyd mixed with Opeth, then a splash of Porcupine tree. Drizzle with Metallica

My band would sound like:
Trivium
as i lay dying
bring me the horizon
salt the wound
all shall perish
through the eyes of the dead
all that remains
KsE
as blood runs black
and Bullet for my valentine
basically any band with core in their genre.

...In the opposites.

Definitely my OWN sound ???, regardless of genre. I'll write the music then decide what genre it belongs to.
...and definitely zero influence from the above mentioned bands and those that sound similar.

...I wouldn't really want to start something that has already been done unless I want to make crazy money ?

dee

Something raw, with a big band swing sound.

Guitar -> Cable -> Amp with volume turned to 10. No fancy effects.

That's it. Think AC/DC or Led Zeppelin mixed with Brian Setzer.

DNC

How about evanescense, nightwish, sarah mclaglan singing. trivium, bullet for my valentine guitars.
As I lay dying drums and with very technical song construction....

Wessel

Something that fuses instrumental rock..like John 5, Paul Gilbert with any good vocals. Maybe Micheal Buble on vocals if he learns to growl and scream aswell.

Oooh - that's a good think.

I'd go in a different direction than most: Me on noise, a tabla player, a cellist and a vocalist. Mix it all up and see what pops out. Think Gilgamesh Ensemble (for those of you lucky enough to have seen them), but with electric/electronic guitar.
(...which reminds me - I must try and track down Lara Block...)

I have a similar idea: A predominantly Pink Floyd kind of sound in the style of Echoes and DSOTM, but with a bit of Celtic/Folk thrown in as well, kind of like Ritchie Blackmore's doing with Blackmore's Night nowadays. Strings, hurdy gurdy and even a banjo here and there like Jimmy Page and Robert Plant on Unleaded. Of course with very sexy female vocalists...

Could work or what?

Heath

i have always dreamed of having a 5 piece band , backed by a full orchestra , sorta like hurricane 2000

Neps

mmm. good old fashion blues.. Wait thats my current band. Then maybe a jazz band with a trumpet and piano backed by someone on percussion.

Although a 4 piece, checkout Septic Flesh ?

Dean's pretty much got everything I'd go for, if I were good enough to match those guys!

Always wanted to be in a ska punk meets funk band too... hmm.. for that, I'm stuck. I definitely want Rage Against the Machine, but the rap makes it hard to mix up...
taking it out would kill the feel though. RATM+Rise Against+Propaghandi with lighter Offspring+Rancid+Less Than Jake style songs in between.
And give it a local political message rather than international.

@ Riot!: LOL

I was being sarcastic man ? I'm physically unable to listen to those bands I mentioned.
I love metal but metal with dynamics and a humanistic feel, nothing that sounds like anything a computer pooped out.
Which in my opinion are the bands on that list

*ducks*
