Renesongs · 2011-09-26T14:00:30+00:00

OK thats more like it people here are our challengers for September. There was some confusion to whether the categories applied so I am going to ask you the jury to decide in your own head which category applies. To be fair please ignore the categories that some challengers used decide for yourself and write a comment if you feel strongly enough .Please cast your 3 votes by Friday 30th
Alrity, so i decided to send this to you before i change my mind. i hope this is ok I'ts just two guitars, lead guitar using an E-Bow Beginner category please http://www.box.net/shared/pqa29n0bif3vxjl7mxje thank you

Rene hi. Here is my entry for the September challenge: The Questioning. I wrote this riff a couple of years ago and entered the original recording a couple of challenges back but pulled it because it was too long. Anyway, we re-recorded it with some additions, most notably, the theremin backing. We thought of adding percusion and bass but decided that the theremin and guitar complimented each other beautifully. This is me on guitar and Harold on the theremin. Enjoy! http://www.box.net/shared/hlzppab1lyu2pkpqxkrs

Hi Rene, Here's my entry for this month's challenge. Nothing as grandiose as I had originally planned and certainly nothing as grandiose as I'm hoping to hear from other entrants but a fun evening's exercise. Sleepwalk: http://www.box.net/shared/si20jmfqgn0l26z5mxck Cheers, Déwald

Here's my entry, a track I post-hardcore/metal track I recorded a few weeks ago. For anyone interested, here is my guitar signal chain: Guitar: Gate --> TSE 808 Tubescreamer --> Nick Crow 8505 Lead --> Poulin LeCab 2.0 with GuitarHacks Impulses (Sneap Edge) --> AcmeBarGig Cab enhancer --> EQ. For the lead guitar I used Aftershock delay module by AcmeBarGig. For drums I used EZDrummer with the pop/rock kit with EQ and compression. Bass I got lazy and just used 4Front bass plugin. FL Studio for the synths and strings. I had fun experimenting with free vst's for the first time, so I hope you enjoy my entry! I don't know if you still do the whole 'Advanced' and 'Beginners' category thing, but I will slot in with the beginners if it is still being used. http://www.box.net/shared/qqbtbqujua0tzazek470

Hope I am not late. ok This is my cover of seasons in the abyss by slayer. http://www.box.net/shared/4yvhcnun8u6yl948e4sh

Ok so it's a cover of the band Pestilence and the song is Twisted Truth. It's 2 guitars and a midi drum track. The solo's are at 0:59 and 2:23 for those that don't want to listen to the whole thing. I entered under intermediate this time if those categories exist for this month. Enjoy :) http://www.box.net/shared/39g6da5ft1h14dqugmlf

Heres my entry http://www.box.net/shared/lxyxxdat55ekzefzksja I really dont know what to say about it.

Here goes. Tried the singing thing, lets see what you all think!! Some time ago I've posted a piece I've written some time ago. So this time around I tried using it with some music! And for all the hard rocking amigos, it isn't a piano song all the way through, stick around till the end!! http://www.box.net/shared/rm3yszad926f130yecs0

Hello Rene, here is my entry. I reckon I am an expert. http://soundcloud.com/highway-chile/up-from-the-antarien-skies Here is my explanation. So I picked this JHE cover from the 60's. I have a lot I can say about all the issues recording and mixing it, but in the essence of it being fun and all I'll just say that I had a good time doing it, even though the mix was challenging in it's own way. I tried to stick to almost exactly how the original was done, down to the panning of the guitars and vocals. I took a few liberties in where I placed the rhythm guitar and vocals because I wanted to also try things out. I tossed Antares-Auto Tune 5 on the vocals for a laff. I have never used it before maxed out...the whole T-Pain or Cher effect. I just wanted to fool around. Initially I had it cranked all the way through but remixed it with the blend dropped and also I automated it in and out, so it was a tad more subtle. Besides, I'm not a singer.......so I figured why not.......everyone else who cannot sing does it! :D :P Hope you like it. I wanted to do one more pass remixing it tomorrow morning, but with the time difference etc I would be cutting it pretty fine. I am looking forward to hearing everyone's entries. Seventhson

I prefer do what you want. Its a lot of fun.

doc-phil

Highway Chile wrote Doc Phil you really nailed it and that is some really nice drum programming. The only thing I could not wrap my head around was.......considering your level of musicianship, the quality of the recording and all the equipment you have........was the beginner status? ? ? ??? ? ? LOL.....I'm just funnin' ya, and it's all good. Between you and me the ranking thing could use revisiting anyway. I was going to enter as a Beginner for a laugh....but I could not bring myself to do it as I am not well known enough here and feared the humor would be lost in translation. ?

Nice work buddy! You did good there.

I appreciate the fact that people are saying I'm not a beginner ? I didn't say that to try and be funny or anything.. it's just that I've entered these challenges in the beginner cateogry a few times and have never won. I thought my entry would have improved on both the playing and production side of things since the last time I entered so maybe I would have a chance at sneaking a win in the beginner category. Alas, no beginner level, and its a tight race! ?

G-Man

Thanks everyone for their input and for taking a listen to my entry. I realized from the out-set that the song wasn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, so I used the challenge to learn a new song (and solos) and stick an entry in for the compo so it's a win win for me. I still have a long way to go. ?

As far as the other entries go I have to say Highway Chile's was about my favourite. (It reminded me a little of Cream, maybe it was the wah? ? )

Some random comments.

Doc Phil: Kick ass tune man, really sounded good to me. I'm going to steal from your VST list, I really liked it.

Jacquesg4j: You have a good voice, I thought it went really well with your song. Then your solo at the end was really good, solid all round.

Seventhson: Really like the tone you get outta yer guitar, cool shredding at the end.

Hammeron: Thanks for teaching me what a theremin is! Really cool track, had that suspense kind of feel to it.

Deefstes : I listened to it a few times, I really dig it! Reminds me of coming home too late from the pub and being locked out of the house. Very cool ?

High level of playing from all of the entrants, good stuff!

Looking forward to the next Compo...

EDIT

Hammeron

Highway, thanks brother! Your comments on my submission are MUCH appreciated! It means the world to me to be complimented by someone of your talent! ?

It is a bit odd, however, that your vote hasn't registered on my score, maybe it's delayed. ???

mity88

Highway Chile wrote mity88 A very interesting submission.....I really enjoyed the sound of the E Bow. I have never even tried one in all my years of playing. I can see having one in the studio for sure. Good shot.

yeah, its really cool, im still figuring it out myself though, it gets those creative thoughts flowing again...

Yeah, I also think the do-what-you-want challenges is a lot of fun. I do feel though that the themed challenges forces me to do things I might not typically do, which is great. I agree, a do-what-you-want from time to time is nice but I'd prefer if the themes continued.

You are most welcome.

Yeah, I clicked on the button next to your name and was immediately taken to the scores but this time no vote button and no buttons next to the other entrants either. It said I could vote 3 times but I do not see that option either. I was expecting I could select a total of 3 entrants and THEN hit "Vote." Not so!

I also notice your name is in bold on my screen, but not the other entrants. I guess to indicate I voted for you.

Dunno. Maybe someone else has less votes....... or I did something wrong. Can someone look into this?

Norman86

the person/people you cast a vote for would be in bold yes! So your vote did go through!

domhatch

ok, i tried to be as genre-neutral as possible. some of the stuff is not up my alley taste-wise, but you can definitely see the work and the talent that went into each and every submission. it took a few listens, but i have made my selection. it takes guts to do this kind of thing oi rekkin, so well done to alls of yers for givin it a bash. good luck, and may the best muthaplucka win!

mmmmmmmmm...it was definetly at 3 for at least 2 days before Highways post.
But that's fine his compliments are more important!
I was thinking, what probably happened was he voted a couple of days ago but only posted yesterday.

stu

Highway Chile wrote

Stu, is that an original? If it is, it's sweet bru'. I dig the riff......it's a killer hook and I like when it slow's down also. You should develop that if it's your song.

Yes its an original. I actually came up with it for a punk band that I play drums for but it doesn't really work as a punk song so I kept it for myself.
Develop it? You saying I should make it better? Dont fix what aint broke ?

I actually did think about changing a few things and going back to the chorus at the end but I dont want the song to be too long. If I ever play it live I will change the arrangements quite a bit. I see your point though.

By the way, if I win I already have a brilliant idea for the next challenge. Its going to be huge fun so you all better get voting!! ? ?

How now brown cow? I get the distinct impression that you're appealing to the wrong crowd for votes ?

domhatch

i'd like to imagine we'd get more entries on a 'do whatever you want' basis, although these do take a bit longer to put together. but from what i've seen, there are still pretty cool entries on the themed comps. so what about two months of themed comps, with the third being do whatever, and so on?

just a thought, use it don't use it

Haha. This is hilarious!! I cant believe I did that ? ?

FruitarGeek

Some great entries. My vote went to Deefstes and Doc-Phil

Deef - Man, you always make me smile when I listen to your stuff. So jolly and crafted. Well done man.

Doc - DEF NOT A BEGGINER. I digged your track. Time to move up to Intermediate

I actually really liked all the tracks. The metal ones surprisingly stood out the most to me. I can hear how all of you are progressing. Well Hammeron its the first time I am hearing your track, but it sounds cool.

However, I am glad that the time restriction is in place, because I can't afford to listen to 6 minute songs ?

stu

Whats wrong with you people?
Its obvious who the winner should be now vote for him. Come on, chop, chop!!

chris77 wrote Downloaded the lot (apart from Highway's. No download button or am just blind?)iast night.

I disabled downloads at SoundCloud 'cos it's a cover. I didn't want to push my luck and have a problem with my account. It is also a very big file.

Anyway....... I just enable downloads.

I have the Box link if you want that. Is that okay to post a link other than the competition link? There is a 6.7mb mp3 version at SoundCloud as well.

The SoundCloud file is a .wav and it is about 45mb. The Box.net is 6.7mb and it is the exact same file as the SoundCloud file except I pushed the volume up a dB or two....nowhere near as loud as seventhson's ? (which is a killer level...nice and hotttttt! )....maybe about the same as Doc Phil or a bit softer than stu.

Hammeron.... I did post a day or so before I wrote that post saying I picked you. But somehow I also remember you being at 3 before I voted. Strange!

chris77

@ H.C, I'll check tonight if I can download it. If I'm still too stooopid to do so I'll pm you for the box.net link.
Can't wait to give all the entries a proper listen tonight!
