Hi, I'm looking to buy a PA system for band rehearsals to run vocals and backing vocals through. I'm thinking a 4-6 channel little mixer and maybe two speakers. Does anyone have some recommendations of what to get? Probably around the R5000 mark.

    Yamaha PAS 300......>>Amazing package

The fender passport is also pretty cool. Very easy to carry.
The Yamaha Stagepas and Fender Passport are both great little systems, but way out of the target budget range, unless you find them second hand. One great advantage of these systems is that when you get to the stage where you are upgrading to the next level, you can hang on to them and use them as your monitor system (I did an outdoor gig recently and we used a Stagepas 500 for the monitors and I was mightily impressed).

R5Kish puts you in the smaller Behringer, Samson and Wharfedale systems which, to my mind are all pretty much of a muchness. See what your local store is pushing and make sure there is local backup. If it's mostly for vocals, make sure that whatever you get has a 10 or 12" speaker, rather than a 15" - the 15" 2-way speakers in the lower price brackets tend to be a bit deficient in the all-important midrange.
I called around and the Stagepas 300 can be had for R5500-00 new with discount begging.

I saw a samson at my local shop for a pinch over R5000 that was basically the same thing.
Sweet! thanks guys! will pop into music connection and see what they have. Will update you guys on what their retail price is on what they have.
If you're considering something entry level, I picked up a wharfdale 600 6 channel and damn that thing has balls. I dunno what they cost new, but this thing with the 15" drivers dwarfs the stagepas from yamaha.

So I went to TOMS today and got myself two Mackie TH-12A and ill be getting a mixer as well. Plugged in a mic into it and I guess it sounds pretty good. Reviews on the net say its decent. 1 Speaker @ R2500. So what do you guys think? Worth it?

So basically this is just for vox?.......the mic just plugs in the back?

The 12a's are the 12" 400watt units right? SHould be more than enough juice to stand up to a drum kit.
