Once again time to restring my bass and as always im shocked due to the price... So why is bass string up to 4times the price of guitar strings? Sure they are bigger and last longer but it seems abit over the top to charge R400+ for a descent set of strings.

It's a lot more difficult to make bass strings because of multiple layers and there is a higher failure rate. All the strings are wound - no plain strings like electric or acoustic guitar strings. But by far, the biggest contributor is the smaller demand, which means smaller production runs and a higher cost.
Be thankful that you don't play upright, where you can pay more for a single string than you are now for a set.

Rotosounds are available for R275 at one retailer (PaulB or Soundworks) and the same set for R400 at another (MarshM)... just shop around and ask for a discount...
And those are the expensive ones, D'Adarios etc. go for less.

I'm using the Rotos myself, but can't remember how much I paid as I bought them as part of a big batch.

Thanks guys, i'll go check out the roto strings... I've been a faithfull user of d'adarios all my life

Try Elixer bass strings. They cost a small fortune, but last much longer. Have not used any other brand since except for a set of `Fender black nylon strings on one one my fretless bases, but that is for a particular sound in conjunction with the piezzo pickup.

Has anyone used Dunlop bass strings? Any good?

Never tried the Dunlops. I like the Rotos but they do seem to go dead quite quickly... I might try Elixirs next time :-\

I play mainly 6-string basses (34 and 35" scale) and it certainly is a problem finding suitable bass strings - let alone what one really prefers. As I mainly use stainless steels, it is even worse.
Maxmusic (online) really goes a long way in assisting and their prices are pretty good. Got my Warwick Black Labels from them and got my favorite GHS Super Steels via Music Mate. SIT Power Wound Nickels are a worthwhile alternative if you can hunt them down...
