Let's see if we can entice more participation with this one: DO WHATEVER YOU WANT! For this challenge, in the hope of drawing out as much participation as possible, we're going to bend every rule we can think of. You really get to do whatever you want. 1. Only original songs, no covers. Says who? If you want to record that solo over the backtrack you've been practicing for the last year and a half, then that's what we want to hear. Make it original or make it clichéd but do whatever you want! 2. Duration must be no longer than a minute. No ways! If you want to record a full movie soundtrack, go for it. Make it long or make it short but do whatever you want! 3. Only four instruments... What? Why? Never! If you want to build a backtrack resembling the full Johannesburg Philarmonic then so be it. Make it grandiose or make it simple but, that's right, you guessed it... do whatever you want! So for this month's challenge and this month only, you get to record anything that tickles your fancy. No specific theme, no restrictions, no reason not to take part. Here's hoping that this will draw the PeteM's with their fingerstyle fancies, the Seventhsons with their maelstromic metal melees, the Squonks with their airy acoustic acrobatics and the Viccy's with their nifty nylon nimbleness back out of the woodwork. Sorry to hear that Pete, it's a shame because your entries are always so mind bogglingly good.

On my entry:I have abandonned the bass! It sounds kinda bass-ey as it is, maybe because of the mahoganey body of my guit, not sure. I should finish it tonight with some luck! (phew)

I'm looking forward to hearing all these entries, it sounds very exciting. Also sorry to hear that there'll be none from PeteM though.

I seem to be running out of time myself here. I had a few grand ideas when I chose the theme but the month's just been hectic. I'll definitely slap something together before the deadline but it'll probably be something way more simplistic than I originally had in mind.

I am having the devil of a time mixing mine....I'm just not getting any love as something is up with the drum tracks....beautifully played by Billy Martin of Medeski, Martin and Wood....but there is this horrid swirling phasing thing happening in places that had to be in the micing of it. I have tried inverting the phase etc and a bunch of other stuff, including using a de-esser and targeting the specific freq's......but nothing get's rid of it completely. LOL...it's turning out to be work....rather than relaxation. ?

How long do I have to try different mixes? I put it up at SoundCloud but it really needs help. Either that or I will just send it as is, just for the fun of entering.

Are there a lot of entries this time?

Since anything goes, I think I will enter this one as a beginner........ ? :roflmao:

Hmmm... mic phase usually causes comb filtering leading to certain freqs being cancelled, rather than a modulated phasing sound.

Have you tried muting single mics to find a culprit? When you find the offending mic, you can shift it in time a few milliseconds (which will change the frequencies that are out of phase - a lot more accurate than simply flipping the phase of the mic 180 degrees). If that doesn't work, it's a room resonance thing, not a miking issue.

Either way, it doesn't have to be perfect for a comp - we're not that fussy! ?

Box.net has a useful feature that you can update a sound file at a later stage while the url to the file stays the same.

I've finally managed to take some time last night to record a little something. I'm not expecting to win any prizes with it but it was fun. Looking forward to hearing the other entries.

I finished mine tonight, and almost uploaded it to box.net but there is something bugging me and I can't quite figure out what it is. ~~I'll give it a final once over on sunday, I'm so sick of it at the moment.~~

Entered mine this morning, won't have time to mess with it some more, but it sounds ok to me!

have you tried super converter. it converts anything when it works... (ive found it unreliable but awesome when all is well)
