Something Tanya loves doing on Deviant Art's chat is "PhotoHunt". A "judge" selects a word (eg: smooth) and then the photogs in the channel run around like mad for 20 mins, finding something to photograph that represents the word. They're allowed minimal editing in Photoshop. The judge then picks the winner. No voting or anything - totally a case of judge's decision is final, etc.
It's very exciting and, after a number of wins, you can go up in the "ranks" and eventually be a judge yourself and run your own hunts. Only hunts run by judges count towards your ranks.
The MAIN thing about something like this is that it inspires you to push yourself on a daily/weekly basis (depending on how often you play). Some of Tanya's best work in recent months has been inspired by photohunts. (Including the pic she took of my pedal the other day. Word was "distortion")
Soooooooooo...
I'm wondering if we could start something similar here? Words might not work but, then again, they could. "Smooth" could be something jazzy, "black" could be a hard-hitting metal riff, etc.
We could start off doing it weekly for a while until we have some regulars and then try doing it every night or something? Of course, not everyone will be able to participate but, trust me, even 3 people competing is enough for it to be exciting.
Interested?

OK I'm game ? - just dont make the deadlines too long otherwise we will be spending far too much time getting fussy and frilly with our DAWS and less time playing our gits.

Could work, but i think if you keep it once a week it will be ok.
MAke a standard time for the samples like 10 seconds or so, otherwise if 20 or more people are entering, it will be chaos!!!

Great suggestions, Manny. I'm open to more!

Rene, what time limits do you reckon? I wanna have enough time for n00bs to get into it and not too much time for pros to totally pwn every game ?

I think a day should be sufficient for most but some people might not access GFSA everyday. I know this sounds complicated but it could be fun is ... you could judge entries on how soon they are submitted and also handicap people by the number of years they been playing. Having said that I just realise that I would probably be the most severely handicapped because I've been playing since... *I think I did Jesus' Barmitzvah...* ?

A day is waaay too long. The idea is to have it be a real short amount of time so you go from idea, to recording, to uploading all within 20 minutes and you can play 3-5 a nite or something.
Manfred-Klose
That could work.
What about the same time every night, say example maby 20:00, everyone who wants to take part, logs on to GFSA and awaits the topic message from norio, start recording, and should be uploaded within 20minutes.
By say 20:25, it closes, and norio or someone else desides on a winner.
And the winner gets karma points, or maby something new like "GuitarHero points".
O yeah, it should be simple, just one track with a guitar, could use guitar rig or anything.
???

+++1 Yeah - what was I thinking - Trying to be kind to n00bs - I think I have spent to many hours teaching absolute beginners :-[

Brilliant idea.
If i have the time i would definitely participate.
But to start things off with, i think it would be important to make it as easy as possible.
Me, being a noob would appreciate it ?

I dig it ? What say you peeps if I pick 5-7 judges and then each one does a different night of the week?
I wouldn't like to have all the pressure of judging and coming up with games sitting solely on my shoulders!

What about the guys that don't have the net at home but only at work?

What about the guys that don't have the net at home but only at work?
Then you're screwed!!!!
Don't have a solution for that one.

Sounds cool, but ya I'd be better suited as a judge, because I suck at playing ?
Bane
aaahhhh...guess i'm going to have to sort out my pc then!!! sounds cool though!! ?

hey, i think its a really cool idea.
like the idea of it being a set time so that you can get prepared.
personal opinion is that it seems every night is quite a lot.
seems that you might then have a small group of the same people entering every night.
maybe every second night or something like tuesdays and thursdays for example?
would mean that more people (especially the newbies like me) would make time to sit down and enter?
any thoughts?

AArgh ..Iam screwed...I only have net at "work"..how am i supposed to play now!!! ☹

ye me to , what about releasing the idea at 4 in the afternoon and closing it at 9 the next morning.
say do that twice a week and and inbetween run the 20 minute one . that way the night owls get there fix and internetless ppl also get a fix

I'm also only online at work. what about something like a 24 hour deadline, from 12 to 12?
Renesongs
+1 Talion - My work and family take me away from GFSA from 3pm to about 10pm so a later deadline would suite me better.
