I don't know the Squier version, but the Fender one is very flexible and can do everything from clean country to very heavy. Not really a fat guitar sound though - still has the Tele "wiriness" and articulation (actually surprisingly so when the amp is driven hard).
Hopefully someone else can compare the Squier to the Fender...
