  • Sum41 cancels Durban show - 2 hours after they were meant to take the stage

So it started raining a bit at Gateway last night during Fire Through The Window's set, granted the stage was poorly constructed and there was quite a lot of water going on to the stage... so much so that they 'lost power'. So they stopped playing mid-song. 15 minutes later is stops raining.

2 hours later everyone is still waiting in front of the stage wondering what's going on. It was dry as a bone around there and the wind (which was not too bad to start with) had died down almost completely. There was no MC or anybody on stage letting people know what was going on.

At about 11:45 (Sum41 were meant to play at 10) a guy takes the stage and says,

"How are you Durban??? Are we all having a good night? Well... due to the weather Sum 41 is not gonna be playing!"

>☹

I could tell from the budget ticket (just a piece of paper printed on a normal A4 piece of paper) that this show was going to be badly organised. There was no pass-out system, so once you were in you couldn't go out.

So... poor organisation + pretentious primadonna band = no show.
Well, I am glad I didn't fork out the dough for that then! Sorry to hear about the bad organization, kinda sad that Durban can't get it together! ☹
I hope you are getting your money back.

Ya we were given slips of paper with a barcode that we have to email to ticketbreak. But still... I don't want my money back, I want Sum 41!
Well, and even if you get your money back. It doesn't pay for the petrol, the supper you probably bought while waiting around, the hours you spent waiting.

          All in all, very disappointing.
I didnt even know that Sum41 came down. Horrible organizing tho, I would have been irate had I been there!
It was bloody infuriating. Sooooooo cold as well. They're bloody canadians, surely they can handle the cold?

I spoke to some industry people last night, and apparently there was a risk of something falling on something else, or whatever. If you're planning such a high profile gig, ie not a pub gig, surely a well constructed stage is priority? Better get my money back...

There's lots of stories going around but I heard they were afraid of something falling on the drummer's head that was suspended above him.... what the hank!? Take it down then!

Ya exactly. I want my quarter-pounder meal, my debonairs sub and my R40 petrol refunded as well ?

I reckon they delayed the announcement that the show was cancelled just so that people would hang around and they could milk the booze sales at the bar.
Jis I would have been really really pissed! But if you rush down to Oppi you will still catch them! I'm not there this year though!

I guess they are used to dealing with the weather properly in Candanadia, like a stage with a roof that does not leak etc maybe? They probably looked at the slap dash setup and said screw it, things where probably not in in with their contract. Sounds like the promoter messed up.
I would not step onto a wet stage, I would not risk damage to my equipment or electrocution.
                      Cold in Durban? ?

What lke 18 or something? ?

just kidding dude, >☹ hope you fellers get your loot back

That was my first thought too. A professional act should be able to insist on a pro level from the promoter ...especially a safe stage. And a wet stage is not safe.

Ya I understand that. I reckon the promoter was most to blame. However, that being said, by the time the show was called off, the ground was completely dry, so I don't know what the issue was unless there were puddles of water that were on the stage or something. And the weather had completely cleared, there was hardly a breath of wind or a drop of rain.
Oooo - I am so glad that I didnt fork out on air tickets, accommodation, car rental and gig tickets as I was going to! There was a reason why I couldnt go, and i guess that things happen for a reason

18??? You think we're living in the North Pole over here? It was probably 25C, FLIPPIN' FREEZING!!! ?
I'd comment but my brain is still in shambles from Sum41's show at Oppi.

                                    Yeah Mike, let us know!
Perhaps I am too much of a fan (Haven't been for probably 5 years) to give fair comment, but it was one of the best nights of my life, let alone the best show. Was just fantastic. Sound was great in all but one song - where there was too much going on in the treble. Great players, super exciting stage presence. Good selection of songs too. Was so surreal, AND it sounded better live than it did on the albums. So I am one happy chappy.
