Vai had a very nice guitar (one that was shaped like a snake with 2 heads fighting each other) built by Conklin guitars when he was with Whitesnake (and he made a killer album called "Slip of the toungue" with them).
Some other interesting designs of Steve's gear include the triple necked JEM, the 20th Anniversary JEM in perspex with flouroscent LEDs in them, and another JEM with a split floyd rose bridge with 2 whammy bars ?
Howzzat for variation?

I never said it was a bad thing that Vai would design something like a chewing gum guitar... I just said that's Vai's style.

The cloud guitar was indeed one of Vai's designs as was the flame one, they were both early prototypes to the jem series custom built for him by Despagni (can't remember his first name, think it was larry or joe)
