Any other guys here that hunt. If so, let's hear what you shoot with [bow or calibre] and waht the last outing presented...

with a simple bush in the center this will be far to easy.... perhaps try this blindfolded for more of a sporting attitude

Also not a hunting fan, even though I like guns and used to own one.

However, sport hunting actually does quite a lot for the conservation of wildlife in general.

Gardening makes you cruel. There's no way around it. Various critters want to nom your hard work and won't be discouraged. It's hard to know whether it's justified killin' 'em. But when you're trying to grow stuff you just don't care anymore. That's reality.

I used to kill rats in my house many years ago. Discovered the perfect way to lure the clever little bastards into a spring trap. I wouldn't do it anymore. But on the flip-side, I'm more than happy to let cats do my dirty work - as I'm sure most of you who've accused Lindsmuse are very happy to do. Am I wrong?

Bit of sympathy for the OP who was just trying to find out if anyone shared his hobby and, if so, what gear they use. He never said he liked to lure animals into pits and shoot them with a nail-gun. As far as we know, he shoots springbok and eats them - much like we eat teeny wee hopping lambs that are hearded through concrete bunkers, pooing themselves with fear, before being grabbed by a leg and shot a couple of times with a gas powered spike,

The things that make little lumps of dirt in your garden are moles, not molerats.
And the "damage" they do is cosmetic - nothing a spade won't fix.
They don't eat plants.

I do agree that if hunting is for eating purposes it's more humane than a slaughterhouse.

I feel your pain. We have a termite infestation eating us out of house and home. Eventually we had to call in the big guns to spray insecticide. I suppose that is cruel too? :-\

They most certainly make large lumps, and they most certainly eat plants. They're very common on the Cape Peninsula - the Cape Molerat and the Golden Molerat, if memory serves.

These are molerats. Been down that sandy old trail. ☹They ain't eating our gardens , they're sanding them over and making caverns and holes etc.)

Actually I'm quite happy to stare at my gooseberry bush - it gives me much joy. I am not landscaping and creating an Elizabethan manicured voluptuous garden. It is genuinely a very modest little patch.

The guys that are actually causing all the troubles are the developers that are so speedily developing along the West coast and pushing all the wild life ahead of them. I'm just in the way. The molerats dig sand (haha). Its nice and soft. The suburban secret is - plant kikuyu grass. That'll keep the buggers out. And it does - I see it all around me.

Sorry for hijack. I know this isn't really hunting anymore.

Yes I am - moles eat insects, mole rats eat plants.

But it is more likely that the offending creature is a Cape Golden Mole - (insectivorous)

I am what is considered by some (less-informed) as Gun-Nut! I love guns (and collect handguns) as much as I love guitars.......however, NOT a hunter, and I have no problem with hunters (to each his own)........ many of my friends I shoot with are hunters, and I will eat the meat, etc........

This is what I do with my guns....... 38 Supers, (my favourite), 9mmP, (9x19 and 9x21), 45 ACPs...... (I don't really like rifles and other long guns ....)

Cape dune molerat. This is the guy - we actually saw him remember. There is always this confusion about which one it is and it's this one. Perhaps there's others as well but this is the one around here. Everywhere around here. Its actually a huge problem in the area but people learn to live with it in different ways.

You guys heard the craziness with the naked mole-rat? I think we get them up in namaqualand and into the Kalahari and whatnot. They are insanely weird.

They are the only mammal that lives like communal insects. In other words, they have a queen which is the only member of the hive that breeds. If I recall correctly, other members are sterile and sexually underdeveloped until a new queen or a new consort is required (or am I making that part up?). They have specialised members.

Oh. And one other wee thing... they have never been recorded as suffering from cancer and are therefore currently being extensively studied for what their physiology can tell us about cancer prevention. Just a very, very, weird animal.

Aubs I find guns fascinating. Not for what they do but for the sheer fine engineering of them. My old man had a colt 45 that, when I was 10, I used to help clean it. It was incredible, a beautiful machine. alas as soon as I was old enough and had enough money to collect, obtaining licences was a mission.

Plus the fact that I might end up using it on someone, you know the saying, Don't let your attacker know you have a gun until you use it on him." At least that's what I was taught so I choose not to have them.
