Anyone want to try out a Timmy?

During a recent break between work contracts, I decided to have a look at the Timmy overdrive circuit. I used the original circuit design and built it on strip board. I made a couple of mods, not to the circuit but to the physical layout. Firstly, I put the connections on the top end of the box, rather than the sides. I prefer this because it means that I can get more pedals on my board ?. Secondly, in my experience most failures on pc boards that get knocked around a bit fail because a wire soldered directly to the board, so I used 2 gold plated 10-way Molex connectors, one on either side of the board to make all the connections to pots etc. I was really pleased with the transparency of the pedal. It's very flexible going from clean to fairly dirty. I lent the pedal to a professional session man and guitar teacher and this was the opening comment in his extensive review There is a lot that I like about the pedal & wouldn't hesitate to have one on my 'board, which is saying a lot 'cos I'm pretty fussy. I'll be getting the pedal back this weekend, so if anyone would like to try it out, you're welcome. I'm in Sunninghill, Sandton.

Johnny, +1 on the thanks!

Great talking gear with you and I'll be in touch next week when Im back (rat) ?

For those of you who like the bluesy break up sound, this pedal is great... the MOST transparent drive pedal Ive tried..

Attila

I like the Timmy quite a lot so far, will play a bit more tomorrow and return it to Johnny on monday

Attila was as good as his word and returned the Timmy to me today. Thanks Attila. ?
So Joe Moore, you're up next. I'll send you a PM with my contact details.

Before the Timmy went to Guido to try, I lent the pedal to a local guitar teacher and session man. He gave a really comprehensive report back, so with his permission, I'll publish it here.

Thanks for letting me try the Timmy out.
There is a lot that I like about the pedal & wouldn't hesitate to have one on my 'board, which is saying a lot 'cos I'm pretty fussy.
To be more specific: tonally, I like how transparent it is, I didn't fiddle too much with the tone controls & only noticed a very slight 'darkening' of the tone when I engaged the pedal. This very slight colouring is pleasant though, so no complaints there. My Providence Stampede & the MI Audio Blues Pro sound more transparent to me, but only marginally & they are quite expensive boutique products.
With single coils, which I tend to stick with pretty exclusively, I'd avoid going over halfway on the drive - really nice crunchy overdrive, although, with a bit of tweaking (can sound a bit 'clippy') i took it all the way up & got very crunchy (be interesting to hear it with humbuckers).
It works very well as a clean boost (level full, drive off) too.
In terms of the physical product, I can give you my preferences - of course this is very subjective territory - I LOVE the knobs, probably my favourite for pedals, the switch is also very nice, smooth & cool. I like the basic size of the pedal, but prefer slightly smaller (I think about two thirds of the depth?) boxes. The feet are cool. The power socket is fine, I like mine at the back of the pedal, where you've put it, possibly more central or lower rather than higher, where it is now? I also way prefer to have the input & output sockets at the sides of the pedal, rather than at the back - makes it far easier when putting lots of pedals in line on my 'board. Anyway, those are my preferences.

Can you post a pic of the inside bits? I read that whole topic and Im quite keen to attempt to build one of my own.

A great, tweakable OD pedal indeed.
Full-bodied , bluesy-transparent to moar drive possibilities.

Tone-wise ? Much like the Barber LTD , 1/2 gainer ,or the MI Audio Blueboy range ....imo.
If I didn't have a Barber I'd definitely get one of these.

Anyone who is a bit bored with their TS-9, should try this.

Thnx so much for allowing me to test it out 8)

It's a pleasure Joe. ?Thanks for the comments on the pedal. Jacques, you're up next. I'll pm you my phone details.

Hope the crisis is over. Jacques is away at the moment so you are welcome to call me to arrange collection.

If Jacques, Joey Bones or anyone else wants to try out the Timmy, it's available. ?
Here are a couple of pics of the Timmy, including a guts shot that Nick asked for - sorry it's been so long coming Nick!
