when i saw guthrie govan and matthias eklundh, i was a total sucker. ? Been trying to have as much fun on guitar as those guys, a real inspiration. i just love them ,and respect them for putting in all those hours to perfect guitar. Who would you like to play like ?

singemonkey wrote Something I like to point out is that sounding "just like me" isn't always great. Think about it. You've heard hundreds of skilled guitarists. How many of them stood out for you? A handful. The rest? Statistically, there's a good chance that sounding like you won't be very exciting ?
Well ja.... I don't see many kids saying "Gee... I wish I could play like X-rated Bob". Though of course my ~~low commercial profile doesn't~~ crocs don't help.

Noticed and fixed!

hmmm, difficult for me to say, because I never play one style only, sometimes I even try and do a Shadows style, others its Maiden, even ,
but in esscence who I would like people to say I sound like, Kirk Hammet... at this stage, record me and play it 10x faster. ?

here goes. one night, in a dark and dingy pub, a single note rings out. behind this low, creamy scream, the band picks up a slow, bluesy 6/8 rhythm. for the next 8 or so minutes, the inhabitants of the blocks surrounding the watering hole are treated to something that sounds like mark knopfler's right hand and eric clapton's left playing the same instrument, and on it a tune born of a place where all the electric blues greats found solace on their passing, and where men like robert johnson and lightnin' hopkins still wander in search of it.

that's the sound i'm after. one day, i'll find it. and i'll come back and haunt y'all with it.

I fear Clapton's LH will battle to keep up with Knopfler's RH.
Sorry to burst your bubble ☹

Lol ? I think i will offend all the Clapton fans here, but in a fantasy league one could argue that Clapton wishes he could play like Knopfler

Like Arjun Menon !!!!!! ?

Then I'd be playing like Hendrix, Vai, Beck, Roa, Satriani and a host of other awesome guitarists ......... ?

Hammeron wrote Yea, if someone said to me - you sound a bit like Ritchie Blackmore - I must admit, it would make my day. ?

Ok, you sound like Richie Blackmore's little sister ......... hope that makes your weekend ........ ?

Of course Rene ?
Imo EC & MK are very different players, and (to me) MK seems like the more well rounded guitar player while EC is highly rated in the blues idiom.
Coming back to the OP, i think it's more important to find your own voice as opposed to playing like somebody else. Squonk & singemonkey touched on this.

singemonkey

Well, I was actually saying, find your own voice, but make sure you know what sounds good first. If you know how to play all the little things that make you go, "wow!" from your favourite players, when you put 'em all together, it won't sound like any of them any more.

It's a little like humour in writing - so I've read. You've just got to write stuff that makes you laugh and hope it does the same for your audience. You don't know what their tastes are, or whether they'll get it. But if you try to contrive it for their listening, you'll end up with nothing.

So with guitar playing you've got to play stuff that knocks you out. Too much obsession with originality and you're trying to impress the audience (which will usually fail) and you're not really tripping on what you're playing. It becomes an intellectual exercise when it really shouldn't be. The people who succeed in being very original are the ones who really dig whatever zany thing they've come up with.

if hendrix had lived...........would he have been as good as Eddy ?

no not van halen! eddy shaver!!!!!!!!!

i wish wish wish I could play like him!

Whenever I play 'Hottest thing in Town' (from Shaver's Tramp on your Street) to a guitarist
they don't say nothing, they just smile, and keep on smiling throughout the song!

The entire album 'Tramp on your Street' is compulsory for any wannbe guitarist.

He is the cat's meow and the dog's bow wow!

Totally agree with you singe. I try to play stuff that knocks me out...sometimes i win, sometimes i don't.
The key, also as you mentioned, is to take all your favourite things and cook them together and hopefully what comes out is unique and satisfying at the same time.

Start with Jimi Hendrix. Probably the most famous Stratocaster player of rock and blues.
