racman I am really enjoying Michael's craftsmanship and artistic expressions on this build. After agreeing to the major foundational aspects I told Michael that I trusted him to make the decisions on the aesthetics of wood combinations and end graft ... I think it was a wise move! ?
racman Thx Mike and Zohn. Strangely enough Zohn, I am the opposite - I only like acoustics really with cutaways and prefer Florentine to Venetian. In fact, all of my builds will have Florentine cutaways. ? I forgot to mention what wood the bindings and purflings are - The purflings are from Bolivian Rosewood and the white and black lines are veneers of Holly (the black is just a dyed veneer of Holly). The bindings are made from African Blackwood again with the white lines made from Holly veneers. All the purflings and bindings I make in Michael's shop.
Squonk These new pictures are awesome Amazing how long the body appears, seems like there is too much space from the soundhole. The grain on the back is incredible
racman It does look a little odd without the bridge. I am interested to see the bridge placement with the FanFret neck ...
rikus Wow... Those are some amazing photos. The craftsmanship is amazing. I cannot wait to see how this one turns out. You are a lucky man Roy. Enjoy the journey! :goodtimes:
racman Thx rikus - I really am blessed to be getting this (and to have already received the Cornerstone Zion- build thread in my signature). Just recieved neck building images from Michael and will try and get a few posted later today ...
racman Possibly what some would see as boring images of the neck being crafted but I thought it may be of interest - it is after all a "Build" thread ?:
Neon-Gecko I don't know how fabricating a neck could be classified as boring? ??? It's always a pleasure to see how a true craftsman goes about his business, me thinks...
Bob-Dubery RoyC wrote What's used for the center strips? And is this for stability, aesthetics or both? Many good builders still build 1 piece neck BUT Many good builders use multi-piece necks, as is this case here. So experts do not agree :-\
racman @ Bob - the multipiece necks (in this case 5-piece) are generally considered to provide more stability and rigidity. It is a more expensive option on most custom builds though. Of course it has the added advantage of looking quite good in my opinion. I believe the wood used here would be Mahogany and a maple middle insert. The thin black pieces are some sort of fibre or composite. As far as bolt on necks go, it is a mortise and tenon joint with a bolt-on neck which is also becoming increasingly more popular with custom builders. In fact few now use the traditional dovetail joint. An interesting thread in this regard can be seen here: http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=186212&highlight=dovetail
