From the Bashkin website:
"The x-braced back is one of the visual signatures of my guitars. The symmetrically carved braces with hardwood cap are clearly seen through the soundhole. In addition to the aesthetic impact, the brace is functional as well. The height of the intersection of the brace controls the stiffness of the back below the soundhole. The stiffness of this area helps create the proper balance between the guitar's projection and the sound to the player."
Also regarding the earlier discussion on the double sides from Michael:
"My building theory regarding the sides of the guitar is that they are mainly structural members of the soundbox. The stiffer and more stable the sides, the more of the strings energy is focused into the top. To maximize this effect, my guitars are constructed with a solid piece of wood glued to the interior face of the primary side. The net result is extremely stiff and stable sides, which helps create a responsive and powerful guitar."
