Sorry to start another topic again about the super champ, i just had a fleeting thought

due to the pure awesomeness I experienced today by pluggin the champ into a 2x12 (8ohm) Mesa boogie cab,
I am gonna go back tomorrow with my 2x12 v30 cab and hear how it fairs...

One thing is tho, my cab is 16ohm (2 8ohm v30's in parallel)... The Super Champ has a single 8ohm speaker output.

It says Minimum 8ohms above it, does this mean that it is fine to put a larger impedence, just as long as it is not lower??

If so, Will there be any tone differences between an 8ohm ext cab and a 16ohm plugged into the champ XD?

??? ??? ???
Never use a higher impedance than rated speaker cab on a valve amp. It can stress the amp to destruction.

Am I reading correctly...two 8 ohm in parallel ? This should afford 4 ohms ? Two 8 ohm speakers in series will afford 16 ohms....

Ja ooops my bad thats what i meant to say - Previous speakers were n parallel, now the 2 8ohms are in series!
just btw the single amp output on the Laney VC15 says 8 -16 ohms, implying that you can use either.
          - i wonder it must have a specially designed transformer or something -
Thats what I suspect maybe with the Fender Super champ - It specifically says Minimum 8 Ohm above the socket, not just 8ohm, perhaps implying that it is ok to use a 16 ohm cab... :-\
You could use an 8 ohm tube amp with 4 ohm speakers, it´s just going to not like being turned up to 11 and distort quite a bit more than intended... :-\
The schematic shows a single 8 ohm tap from the output transformer. The speaker output plug is marked with 8 ohms min.

Contrary to the norm, some of the newer 8 ohm amps are happy to run into 16 ohms. I'm not sure if it has something to do with an uprated OPT or freewheeling diodes coupled to the OPT primary. The Laney Cub 12R is one such amp. I recently modded Craig's one to accept an external 8 ohm speaker in series with the internal 8 ohm unit. He has had no issues and he was happy with the tone too ?

I'm not sure if the Super Champ is happy to run into a 16 ohm load. I tried downloading the manual from Fender, but my browser crashed. I'd suggest checking the manual or contacting Fender. Even if it is possible, the tone may not be to your liking.

thanks for your comment Graeme! But i have decided to go with the Laney Cub 12R anyway, after extensive amp tests today! So that solves the problem!
                have a good one ?
