Think about the form in which you put it away - living in Africa you stand a good chance of ending up like a Zimbabwean Pensioner - most of them paid for pensions with what should have been reputable companies. End result was that the senior management from the pension cOMpanies led the Life of Riley with house boats in Kariba and Nyanga, mansions in the most affluent suburbs, new Jeep Cherokees and Merc coupes whilst their loyal clients rot/rotted in misery. To give you an example, my late step father, who was a farm manager, had a total pay out that equated to USD218.00!!
Think about splitting your money between Kruger Rands and perhaps an offshore account. IMHO all of this talk about interest and pensions was valid back in the days of the Empire - times are changing fast.
I put money in offshore investments. I think it's a good way to lose money. By contrast the JSE all-share index grew steadily over 2012. SATRIX is about as close to a guaranteed long-term inflation beater as you can get.
There's plenty of people in Europe and the USA who lost a lot of their retirement savings. The Enron collapse by itself rendered lots of retirements less comfortable.
What I do know is that if you don't save you end up with nothing.
