Exactly. Doing things that way he left no electronic "footprint" that the USA could pick up. Previously they had come close to cornering him, but it had been when he'd made a telephone call that got detected by computers analysing phone traffic monitored by satellites.

So once he set his house up without those connections the chances of an accidental leak were vastly reduced.

Sheesh! Doesn't anybody read the newspapers? That's exactly what happened, the CIA identified one of Bin Laden's couriers and started following him. Last August they finally trailed him to this compound. Since then they have monitored that compound until they had had a high degree of certainty that Bin Laden was inside.

He'd been there some years, but not the entire 10.

I reckon the intelligence agencies wanted to be sure about the fact that he was indeed hiding out in the compound. If they moved in prematurely they could potentially have compromised lines that could lead to Bin Laden. The whole compound went through a great deal of effort to conceal what was going on inside, so I don't find it strange at all that it took them that long or that the Pakistani government didn't know about it.

Apparently the "Navy Seals" went in after him. I'm a little skeptical about this . This was a carefully planned raid to capture a high priority target held up in a fortified compound. That is the exact role that Delta was formed for. I reckon these weren't some lowly "Seals" that conducted this operation. It was either DEVGRU or Delta, or a combination of both me thinks.

I am trying to reply to X-rated Bob and Isis but am having trouble....it will only preview a fraction of the post and I keep getting an error from Safari.

I went on Google Earth for fun and found Bin Laden's compound based on a very sparsely detailed type map....basic X marks the spot with only two road names . I was able to figure out the basic area from that though and from a diagram of his property I found it. But it will not post. Anyway I am going to shine my long reply and just send this short version....

I think you are right Isis , about DEVGRU or Delta....probably Delta. The mission was so secret only a very few top officials knew about it. Plus those Delta guys are tight with the CIA....it does seem like their handiwork huh? I think Obama even said in his speech that the public will never know who carried out the mission and I remember thinking that it was an odd thing to say. Why say anything?

Lowly Seals huh? I am aware that DEVGRU is what Seal Team 6 became. So it is made up of Seals, at least some. You know way more than I.... you seem to know a lot about special mission units. I guess Seal Team 8 is the deal now.

According to Glenn Beck, some idiot reporter has been claiming to know that it was Seal Team 6 that had the mission. Except they don't exist anymore. Well all the news is claiming it was Seal's.....I reckon that in order to maintain transparency, whoever did it is letting them run with the Seal story.

I tried getting the Google Earth image to preview and it came up finally...it's REALLY small though......dunno why?

Look how remote it is around there. I realize now why no person saw anything....probably not a lot of foot traffic there. With the military academy there most people probably thought to just STFU anyway. Sorry about the tiny image.

Well I don't like the slant of every paper and news organisation under the sun, but facts are facts - no matter who reports them, and it was widely reported that the US had identified a foot courier some years ago and had carefully tracked his movements to find where he was operating from - first to a town, then to a building. Once they had that building they could start more detailed analysis.

Now if the Communist Workers Daily reports that they may apply some editorial spin, just as the John Birch Society Bulletin (I'm sucking names out of my thumb here for the sake of example) would. In neither case are the facts changed. You can reject what is extrapolated from the facts but accept the facts themselves.

Another example of this principle. There is particular historian who has written a lot of books. I own 4 or 5 of his books and have read a couple more. This apalls some people I know who regard said historian as being like Pol Pot only a lot nastier. Other people I know intepret this as my seeing the light.

In truth I don't trust this author in some ways. I have heard him take some very dubious positions, and I sometimes differ quite strongly on the conclusions he reaches from the facts he relates. But I trust his facts because he is a rigorous historian. If he says William The Conqueror blew his nose in the presence of the Duke of Anglesy in June of 1067 then I believe that. If he starts speculating on what this says about William and his beliefs then this is an area in which I may differ with him. I accept his data, but I don't necessarily accept the conclusion that he forms from his data.

In respect to the Forum...... I dont think this is something I want ot see being discussed when I go to talk about gear or guitar, as its a bit close to home. I am a member of The Geat Page and Dr Z Forum, and they have banned any talk on this subject...

I agree and have locked this topic. If you guys are upset because you really need to talk about this, I suggest trying MyBroadBand.co.za, Facebook or other, more general forums. Our rules here are strict to keep things civilised and to keep this a great GUITAR forum.

PS: For future guidance about whether or not a topic like this can be allowed to live... If the topic is about politics or religion, lock it down. If a single post in a whole topic of guitar-related posts is about religion or politics, then deal with that post.
