I dig Gambale. Have any of you guys heard his cover of Cream's/Clapton's White Room? It's totally instrumental, and yet, totally captures the feeling of that song perfectly. And Gambale's playing is streets ahead of Clapton's.

Really beautiful. I think I got this album (Passages) off of eMusic.com. Go check it out if you can!
I got an Al Dimeola Instructional DVD and under BONUS FEATURES there is footage of Gambale
playing in his 3 man outfit, outstanding fusion stuff....

    Has anyone seen it?
Haven't seen that but ole Meir loaned me his "Modes no more Mystery" DVD and that was cool. Gambale goes through EVERY mode and shows you how to make a chord progression and then plays an example for you and stuff.

Sometimes he floors me with his playing (speed, accuracy, feel) and sometimes, even on the same album, he bores me with his playing (too much speed, lack of feel now and then).
Got the Modes: No More Mystery DVD - brilliant way of explaining
modes from chordal perspective - and training ears

I wouldn't say Gambale is BETTER than Clapton - one is a blues/rock great, and the other is a speed accuracy fusion/shredder - 2 world's apart.
Sure Gambale can run rings around EC technically, but how many songs has Gambale written that you (or almost anyone in Joe Public) can name ? ?

I hear what you're saying and, normally, I'd be right there with you. But, in this case, I'm talking about Gambale's rock/blues playing on the White Room track versus Clapton's on the same song. (I have The Cream of Clapton album)

And, honestly, Gambale does Clapton better than Clapton ?

But I definitely restrict that comment to just this song. Gambale's general style is just too different (most times) to be compared to Clapton.
I think that Gambale doing a signature Clapton number is Gambale giving a nod of respect to Clapton. Of course he should do it better. Rather like Hendrix did with Sunshine of your love or SRV did with Little Wing. If you don't do it as well or better than the artist you are paying tribute to then you are not really paying them a compliment IMO. (So what the hell was Sheryl Crow thinking when she did Little Wing ☹)
+1 Rene! Great way to look at tribute covers. Of course, then there are just people who do covers because the song resonates with them and not necessarily to do a tribute. I think that's what Crow did ?

Can't say I'm a fan of her cover of GnR's Sweet Child o Mine either!
