Meet n greet n get togethers in Gauteng?

Sooo...

After meeting a few guys for the first time, i was wondering if there were ever any get togethers where everyone gets together?
Instead of just one or two guys, a whole bunch?

It's been done in the past. The late great Stratisfear organised a get together at a rehearsal studio a couple of years ago now I think about it. There were about a dozen people at that.

There was some discussion at that meeting about other real world activities. That led eventually to Gearhead organising a two-night setup workshop at Andy McGibbon's, and that was well attended (and Andy was very generous with his time and knowledge).

Then there was a jam/get together/braai that Keira organised out in Midrand that went quite well with several GFSAers and some invited guests giving performances.

Norio organised a weekend affair out near Hartebeespoort.

Finally - that I can think of - there was X-Stock. Pictures are on GFSA somewhere. That had a good turn out (including Sean coming up from Vereeniging) and there were performances, a braai and a Travis picking workshop (contrary to anything you may have heard on the grapevine, Lethe did not do horrible things to my carpets).

So ja... there's been a few.

No reason why that couldn't be seen as a GFSA meet & greet ? I hope to be there, I'm sure XRB will be there, we know a few GFSA'ers will be performing and I'm pretty sure we'll see a few other forumites there as well.

I was hoping for more of a weekend thing to be honest...
I work till after 9 every weeknight! Except for weekends of course!
Otherwise i would have been there like a bear!

I've enjoyed meeting forum folk in person, and I wish I could get to see the folk I've met more often. X-stock was great, I don't see any reason for not having a Norman-stock sometime in the future? 8)

Well it's not a GFSA show per se, but a show with some GFSAers on stage, like the last one I arranged for TJs. I don't put anybody on that stage because I like their postings to GFSA, I put them up there because I judge that they will turn in a good set.

Yes... we could meet and greet there. I'll be busy on the night so y'all will have to excuse me. We've had GFSA tables at TJs before.

Another option might be open mic night at TJs. Last Thursday of every month (though maybe not this month), that means people can play if they want to and we can shout and whistle and throw things. But it's not a jam session, and it won't be JUST about GFSA and so we cant' set the agenda. So maybe that doesn't count.

well yeah these get togethers are great fun ... but it's always cool to be hooked into the members performing ....

but both X stock and the day i hosted were only for acoustic performers..... cos we all have neighbours...so both of those were days with rule number 1 being "no electrics' even tho the acoustics were thru a PA ...

i believe the one norio organised was electric and no noise issues but it was far outa town....

so what is needed is a venue nearby that people can plug in and play AND NOT HAVE THE NEIGHBOURS DRAWING UP PETITIONS IN THE AFTERMATH .cos who ever hosts it still has to live there once the day is over ?

having it in a live music venue is a good idea but then if it's open to public the venue owners would want a structured show and not just a jam session ..

so lots of things to think about but it is possible and i'm sure it would be fun ...cos lots of diverse music tastes here and lots of talent too

Thats sounds like an assumption if I ever heard one.
I think you guys are being a bit picky now about "offensive wording" there is nothing offensive in saying "The Late Great"

Erm...Stratisfear and Bob are mates. So I think Bob would be forgiven the writing of his premature "obituary". ?

EDIT:
Although, reading it again, I do see how it might be assumed that something rather terminal had happened to Strat...don't think that was the intention at all though.

As a moderator it's hard to wade in here because I have options available to me that y'all don't. You might also be thinking that well, there's no point in using the "report to moderator" function.

When I was approached about taking a moderatorial role this was a concern that I had and discussed. Who moderates me? I shouldn't be above it all. There was also the matter that there might be people looking to settle old grudges or taking issue with something that I post because it's me not because whatever it is is really offensive (I think most of you who have seen a lot worse on GFSA, and you will know how you did or didn't react and why). This was discussed and I can assure you that if you go the reporting route the matter will be looked into by another moderator.

So if you're sure you are genuinely offended then have no fear about requesting moderatorial intervention. The matter will be looked into.

I'd suggest some caution about using Stratisfear's exit from GFSA as support for some point or other. Some of you may know Stratisfear in real life and socialise with him, or have some communication with him other than on the forum. If that's the case and if he wanted to tell you why he was quitting GFSA then, and I think I know him well enough to say this, he would have told you. If he hasn't done so then the speculation is just speculation.

All that said, this is not a matter that I can be objective about, or, more to the point, will be trusted to be objective about, so I'm staying out of this from now on. It's never a good thing to have the umpire simultaneously involved in the game, so, as regards this game, I'll quit both roles.
