Take a buddy with to the store when you wanna play some guitars.
I'm always going into guitar shops and not being able to buy the beauties on the wall, but have helped peeps find what they're looking for.
The last one was the left handed Cort acoustic which left a huge smile on a young traveller's face.
It has to be a pleasant experience! ?

I can appreciate the fact that very few customers that step through the door and actually purchase something. That being said, I have zero tolerance for salesmen having an attitude with me. I once went into a well known music store because I was in the area and wanted to check it out. I had no intention of buying anything apart from a packet of strings and a few plectrums. Even though I was the only customer in the store the service I got was appalling. I told the guy I wanted to buy a few new plectrums. So he asked me what type I wanted and I told him I just want to try some new ones. We went to the counter and he took out a few single picks from underneath the counter. He showed them to me and I asked him If I could come around and have a look at what they had. He in a very rude way told me to stay in front of the counter. That attitude I did not appreciate. Even my girlfriend commented on how blerrie rude the guy was afterwards. I'll never set foot in that store again. I pride myself on the fact that I have never given a salesman kak about anything. Even if they screw things up badly. I'd appreciate the same.

I crap on the sales guys in all the stores...it's fun, try it...they're not boxers, they're guitarists, they can't hurt you.
Although, be careful of the drummers, those dudes are tough, they work out. ?
I think what happens is some of them lose concentration and start taking things for granted, they forget to see things from the perspective of the potential customer that's just walked into the store...what's that customer thinking as he walks into your store.
Passion and energy are what's needed, if you don't have those two things you can't be a salesman...some have it, and some don't.
And, always be confident when you walk into a music store, you're the boss, especially if it's the first time you're going to that store, because the second time you go in they'll know who they're dealing with.
If a guy doesn't help you to your satisfaction then tell him, make him help you.
Please remember, if you play a guitar it would be nice to give it a little rub down after playing it, ask the salesman for a guitar cloth, not his old AC/DC T shirt, and gently wipe off the gunge you left on the guitar...because I can assure you they're not going to clean it. ?
Having said all that, some stores do have it all, good friendly knowledgeable salesman, and a good cup of coffee.

Totally agree... I think all I want is just the salesperson to be helpful no matter what.
I definitely have noticed a form of 'profiling' going on, my whole life. My girlfriend has been playing guitar for 16 years and bass for almost 7. She was looking at upgrading from 4-string to 5-string bass and was checking things out.. The salepeople ignored her and only helped me, thinking she was just the 'muzo's chick'. Eventually after she requested help they showed her some cheap Hello-Kitty thing and said 'Try this, its a great bass to start off on'. She was so pissed that she won't go there again. >☹

maybe it's just me ......... but i have very very few BAD experiences in music stores........
and i do think we must not expect the salesperson to read minds.......as in tell him /her specifically what you want and what quality you looking for ...... cos in reality they sell more cheapie guitars in all the stores that top end ones ....... so if a salesman shows you a tanglewood when you really wanted a martin just mention it before ..........
i was a stranger to this town 4 yrs ago and i have received awesome service from a certain woodmead store right from day one........ and sure they get busy at times and i also need to hang around for 20 min for my prefereed salesperson but the result is prices that beat anybody's and info and service that leaves me feeling like a valued customer . and nothing is too much hassle....... and quotes are gotten and if they can't be given to me immeadiately i get them sms'd to me in course of the day.
but i in turn offer them my bussiness .....
but most importantly i think communicate clearly what you want ...in fact quite often i like to browse around without the salesperson hovering so i tell them that , and when i need advice on specs /prices i call em, this works for me
and yeah unless i'm ready to buy it . i have no problem not playing the 60K ramirez or whatever they have in the glass case ,

I have only ever bought from two music shops ever but I always got EXCELLENT service and deals. I believe its because I made it clear from the outset that I am a n00b. For one thing, the sales peep knows he will be taken more seriously and will therefor be more forthcoming both with advice and price adjustment. A little bit of humility can go a looooong way, even if its feigned. It works with cops, it works with salespeeps.

I think music stores are still trying to sell a product and should thus gear their staff to that end. The music store I usually buy from checks all the boxes as far as I'm concerned. The sales people approach me if I enter and ask if they can help me with something. I either ask for help or tell them I'm just browsing, at which point they will either help me or leave me alone. Luckily they know me by now, so they know they can trust me with their more expensive guitars and stuff. As a result I've bought most of my gear from them since I started playing which if my math serves me correctly would total to over R60 000.
They've always responded to my request for quotes and they've always given me good service. Even the time a new prestige of mine came to the store with a broken truss rod. They contacted Ibanez and sorted it out for me within a couple of weeks, even given me regular updates. I'd rather drive slightly further and spend slightly more money if that means I'll get good service.
