The best thing to do is to lock the GT6 away and play the electric clean, this way you can hear exactly where you are at.All this mistakes, bum notes etc will be amplified and resounding in your ear, no chorus and delay or distortion to hide behind.
This is what I did about a year back, improved my electric playing hugely.

I also agree with Singe's idea of playing the guitar unplugged. In a way you're hearing what you're playing without really hearing it, plus i find it a great way to develop the inner ear.
Getting an acoustic is not bad idea at all. For the first 3 years of my guitar life i owned a cheap @$$ one with really bad action which really didn't help me with the widdlee-wee stuff. What it did do though, is force me to learn a whole bunch of chords and focus of rhythm.
After grafting on that acoustic for 3 years, i found it a breeze when i moved on to playing an electric.
