if you could only have four pedals, and you were me...

mainly, i play blues, now and then a little rock and occasionally some other stuff, mostly clean through the amp. i have a wah and a boss ds-1 & a bd-2, one of which i'll most likely dump - probably the distortion, the overdrive is way yummy. for now, i don't think i can pack more than two or three more pedals into my budget. i'd like to hear what y'all think... peace dh

I find myself never really latching onto volume pedals..... I actually dont play much with my volume knob, I just require the guitar to be at that point of breaking up, then pick attack is the best control......

singemonkey wrote Keira's right. For blues the only necessity is guitar and tube amp. From there on it's nice-to-haves. Spring 'verb built in is ideal. OD gives you a boost and can thicken up your tone. Delay and Tremolo are to taste.

And a tuner pedal. Don't squirm out of this one...

Heath

a nice reverb , od , volume and wah . nice simple to the point ..........

Hammeron

You got overdrive on the amp + Cry Baby, Phaser and tuner. Keep it simple, Rock on.

Hold on...

Can I make one of my pedals a TC G-System? ?

+ Volume Pedal + Tuner + Footswitch for channel/FX loop/EQ ?

That's 4!

yike. ok. so basically there are about a million different options, and i should get out there and try a few for myself before making up my mind on anything. sounds like the dark beginnings of a cunning plan!

make no mistake, dear forumites, i am immensely grateful for the advice and wisdom that has been dispensed, and in all likelihood will continue to be dispensed given the topic, in answer to my mind-scratchingly difficult poser. yet i see a few consistencies, so i'll put together a bit of a thought on it and get back to you. and who knows, mr ratcliffe may even get his fifth pedal...

spank you, spank you all very much.

peace

Gotta love that cry baby ? Honestly when ur messing around just jamming you can do anything on the guitar and WAH it into something cool ?

Rockbox Boiling Point Overdrive + Reverb/Delay + Noise Supressor + Tuner = A gig-ready setup for any Blues musician.
The rest is in the hands. 8)

Well I love ELECTRO-HARMONIX'S stuff, so if I had 2 only have 4 pedals they would be:
EHX Memory Boy (Analog Delay)
EHX Nano Small Stone (Phaser)
EHX Little Big Muff (Fuzz)
EHX Pocket Metal Muff (High Gain Distortion)

And if I could add 1 more pedal it would be the:
EHX Neo Clone (Chorus)

I would keep it simple. It is better to get one good sound than multiple pedals giving you lots of potentially bad sub-tones. Although obviously if you get one good sound that will give you access to many other good sounds and textures through volume, tone and finger/pick adjustments etc.

But for me I find it also depends on the volume you are playing. If you are able to turn your amp up full or thereabouts then I would first try the amp only and see what you get. If you need your solos to cut through a bit more then try a couple of pedals and work from there. If you are not able to turn your amp up that loud then pedals might give you more versatility.

But if this is purely a fun thing then my current choice right now would be:

Wah or tuner
Overdrive
Second Overdrive (for slightly different od sound / a blend with od1 or to boost a solo)
Boost or compressor

But tomorrow this will change no doubt

I think you need a "I don't work for or in any way represent Electro-Harmonix or any of it's subsidiaries" disclaimer ?

Asssuming it's a clean amp and I have a clip-on headstock tuner handy, then OD > Dist > Fuzz > Delay

In my case that would be :
VOX Ice 9
Suhr Riot
Zoom Ultra Fuzz
Strymon Brigadier

Absolutely loving this setup - the best tone I've ever had...until I change it completely and claim my next pedal selection is the best I've ever had. ? In all seriousness though, I doubt that day will come nearly as quickly as it has in the past, if at all, because these sound killer and fulfil my every current tonal need. Along with my tuner pedal, boost and octave fuzz of course.
