Prominent metal bands

Hi Guys What metal bands should I look out for? Was kind of introduced to Trivium but get irritated when vocalist can't pitch properly when screaming. Was also introduced to Dragonforce but too monotonous. Conrad

Opeth are masters of all! They have such a great composition.

I buy alot of Metal mags, and the cd's that come with em are pretty decent. Metal Hammer always puts a smile on my face! ?

Amorphis is a new favourite of mine, give their album "silent waters" a listen!

If you are a fan of the more Death Metal sound, check out the SA band Child! I quite like them!

Betray The Emissary is also pretty good if you like the screamo style of metal. 8)

Amorphis are bloody well gods in my opinion. Damn I love that band! Certainly worth checking out every one of their album! Freakin amazing! From Death metal to Psychadelic prog stuff to rock to metal! Underated by miles! Amazing! Kudos to you!

Aah, Child are quite original regarding their sound, I co-produced them. But they're Black Metal not Death Metal ?
The Corpse Paint and Satanic Imagery kinda give it away.

Where are they based? I have never heard of them and i'm always at gigs when SariFist, Erebus, Warthane are playing as well as most of the death/black metal bands. Just never seen child at any of these events.

I really want to get into Dream Theater but that vocalist makes it really hard.

Many people say that and I degree to a degree. I always thought Dream Theater would be perfect with the vocalist of Symphony X. I still have all their albums to date though.

For me, that's just aerobics on instruments, I'm afraid.

If you want to hear heavy (at times) and really interesting timing, Check out Thrak! era King Crimson. Two drummers, two guitarists, two stick players. Not metal tonalities, but heavy at times nonetheless.

lol Yeah I've said that many times, but shit. Imagine if he did vocals for DT...they'd sound 30 times better imo.

I must agree! Betray The Emissary are awesome! The recording of their cd was also pretty amazing for a South African production (if you know what i mean!). One of the very few bands in SA that I would make effort to go see.

Yeah, they have an energetic performance that keeps you interested. I haven't heard the album yet but from what I did hear Louis did a good job with the recording. ?

Dream Theater are a brilliant band and if you took some time to really sit down and listen to them you'll realise that it's not aeorbics on instruments, there's alot of focus on themes in their solo moments and they're always very tasteful. As for the singer, his voice has been alot more tollerable on the later albums such as Train Of Thought, Octivarium and Systematic Chaos though when he goes into the higher registers is when it becomes painful. The bottom line is that they are what they are and you either love them or you don't but Dream Theater without James Labrie wouldn't be Dream Theater, they'd be the worlds most awesome band ever and then everyone would love them and there'd be no reason for any other artists to even exist anymore, and I'd be F***ed off at the fact that everyone would always be talking about them and ruin it for me ?.

Funny bit of info in the song In The Name Of God off of the Train Of Thought Album there's a part in the drumming where Mike Portnoy (using his cymbal as dashes and his snare as dots) actually spells out "suck my balls" in morse code, a fan picked it up on one of his instructional videos and he confirmed it, TWO YEARS after the cd was released ?

Other cool prog bands to check out though would be Circus Maximus, Pagan's Mind, Iced Earth (not sure if you'd really call them prog) and Porcupine Tree.

I don't pass comment on music I don't know. I got into Images and Words for a while, thanks to a keyboardist I was playing with (Matt McKeon), but it wore off fairly quickly. Technically very impressive but no lasting impact for me. I'd rather listen to Porcupine Tree, Mr Bungle and my old favourite progsters: King Crimson and Jethro Tull, Yes and ELP.

Well, there's a good musical reason for choosing a pattern. I can also appreciate 12-tone Serialism, but I wouldn't want to sit down and listen to it.
