The Les Pauls of GFSA (rule modification)

singemonkey · 2011-03-16T13:05:47+00:00

We can't let the Strat maniacs have all the fun. Let's see all the Les Pauls. All the ones you've posted before, and the ones you haven't. We're talking all of the single cutaway, mahogany backed guitars with a Gibson Les Paul scale-length. We want to see the Epiphones, the Tokais, the Tanglewoods, the Corts, the Gibsons, the Ibanez. And then say just a little bit about 'em. rule mod: Only post pictures of your specific guitar. No product shots. Even if it's a grim and grainy cell-phone pic, at least we know it's the very same guitar you plunk away on (you need not delete existing product shots, just make sure to post a pic of the actual guitar sometime ? ) Here are mine which you've all seen before: 2009 Tokai LS150 Had this one since the last year. Absolute beauty. My main gigging guitar. Pure quality. Super-comfortable chunky neck. 1983 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe One of the infamous Norlin-era Gibsons. Heavy as about four of Reinhard's LP, and about 12 of Nick's ? but I love it anyway. Did a lot of modding before I was happy with it (mini-hums to P90s, roto-grip tuners, Bigsby B7, bell knobs, etc.). Strung with .11s now. Bit of a slim neck. Crazy low "fretless-wonder" type frets. Just needs a grounding issue sorted out before it's ready to gig. Had this since '95 and it's the possession I run back into the burning house for. Over to you guys.

TV Jones pickups in there? I like your move with the all-black hardware. Any idea who made this guitar? I wonder if it was made by one of the big companies like Fujigen.

Squonk wrote What pickups are those?

Unfortunately not TV Jones - they're GFS pickups - very happy with them.

Been trying to find out more about the guitar for ages - when I got it there was a price sticker from a pawn shop in Jonurg dated 1974...

I'll dig a bit. Bolt-on, or set-neck?

Ebony? Looks more like rosewood to me. Are you sure?

Ebony is Gibson's term for black - to sound ~~more pretentious~~ classier ?

Its bolt-on... I kept coming up with conflicting stories - some adamant that they are from the Fujigen stable

I don't know for sure, but having worked on a few I can tell you they were of similar quality and build as the Fujigen guitars.

I think the "All Ebonies" have a good chance in this year's rugby world cup ?

Family shot from a jam here in Jhb recently, 2 Tokais, 2 Epis and 2 Gibbos.

Ok. So knowing that 4 is your R8, I'm going to guess. PM me the score so others can play ?

Gibson, Epi, Epi, Gibson, Tokai, Tokai.

Edit: Can I mention that you're as much a Les Paul fiend as Vic. You two need therapy. ?

MikeM

HEheh, will pm your score quick. But there are 4 owners' babies here.

I will try to post a better pic of just the LP at another time, but for now here goes. The Hohner LX250G is on the right. Mods as listed in my signature.

That Hohner is pretty - how does she play?

singemonkey

My buddy had a cheaper Hohner when we were starting off. For a long while they were the only Les Paul copies you could get in SA - before the Ibanez branded ones. Another buddy had a higher end one which was a really decent LP. Hohner made really good budget stuff in the early '90s.

Probably late in replying to this thread... but here's my Les Paul type.

late 70's Eko C-33
- Maple solid body 42mm thick
- Laminated neck of same material
- Indian rosewood fingerboard

singemonkey

Nice guitar. Just thought I'd point out before other excluded guitar's owners get mad, it doesn't qualify under the rules of this thread - all-maple body excludes it. Needs some mahogany in there under the definition of the thread (see first post) ?

Not dissing your guitar though. Looks great.
