  • Fair price for Strat?

I would like to sell my Strat but have no idea of what a fair price would be. It's Mexican, and red, and has a hard, flat case and comes with a practice amp. The 3 pickups have been changed to Lace Sensor pickups, two with blue writing, and the neck one with Silver writing. What would be a fair price to ask?

Reason for selling? 8 Guitars, 3 kids, no interest. One son drums his fingers on the table from time to time, apart from that, no musical interest shown so far by any of them.

Any comments would be welcome!

Sell the kids instead? You might be able to pick up a good deal on one who's interested.
ok i see u fixed the pic links - thanks
Thanks Stratisfear. What would a fair price for the kids be?

It depends on whether they've been modded... Do they have any belt buckle rash?

On a more serious note, R5500? (Sans amp. Will that be part of the deal?)

My cousin's son did that. His parents got the hint, they bought him a set of Pearl drums for Xmas. He was on a program called "I Am A Work Of Art" on SABC TV three weeks ago, and is studying drumming with a session drummer (his surname's Roper, who has done sessions with quite a few "Big" bands), and is on his way (IMHO) to being a fantastic drummer.......... he's 12 years old....... (Eli's new Local Hero)

So, FP, take the hint......you may have a Keith Moon, or Charlie Watts (or better) in the making.......... ?
I'd guess R6K-ish. Mexi Standards seem to go for at least R4K. Yours is in excellent nick and has good pickups and the amp.
I wouldn't sell the amp with the guitar tho?

It's almost impossible to sell a 10W practice amp, so makes sense to use it as a deal-sweetner.

Sad to tell you but second hand market does not reflect new pricing at all ..i reckon you will be lucky to get 5 all in ...great guitar without a doubt but ppl prefer to go an pay 10 in the store (incl case and pups) than give you 6 makes no sense i know but this is how it works with musical instruments...

Just making excuses not to buy it in stead of accepting my insufficient bank balance!
Fair price, for what it's worth...I have traded quite a bit in this market and a 2nd hand strat Mex goes for about R4k. If you have extras, like an amp, a case and good pickups, the price goes up a bit with each extra, so i would say total about R5k in this case, or R5,5k max. Having said that, if you find there are only few possible buyers and only one sincere final buyer, and you want to conclude a sale, you could end up negotiating a lower priced sale.
...and, to add to what IceCreamMan says about store buying preferences, I agree fully with his view.

Come on guys thats not true...I'll give you R500 for it, but only if that includes shipping ? hehe but seriously, good luck with that sale ? Im sure someone will bite soon enough ?

About the guitar, it looks really great! What red is that? Cause it definitely doesn't look like the 'bullet strat red'...it looks sexy! ?

Anything can be sold on a willing buyer / willing seller basis.
But ... the deal price may be completely unrelated to purchase price.

On this very point, I've have seriously contemplated getting a GT-8 from time to time.
However ... the utility I would gain from this device has just not coincided with the prices being asked.
I'm not complaining though - it has just meant that the deal hasn't happened.
Firstly, I'm moving this thread to Gear, as advice and discussion like this shouldn't be in classifieds. Fingerpicker, when you want to post an actual ad with a price, start a new thread in classifieds.

RE: Selling a GT-8. To be honest, I think most guys are asking too much for them (I bought one late last year and paid less than most are asking). Tech marches on relentlessly and prices plummet - we home studio types are well used to this. You have to time when you buy and sell these kinds of things and accept that you are going to take a hefty knock if you hold on to it for too long. And the more you pay for some shiny new device, the more of a knock you will take on it when you do sell. Otherwise you hang on to it for as long as possible and get the use out of it so that even if you give it away after ten years, you will have had your money's worth.

When the GT-10 came out, prices for the GT-8 immediately dropped quite a bit to R3K - R3.5K. But now, three years later, guys are still trying to sell them at or near to those same prices. December I thought R2.5 - 2.8 was a fair price. But January brings winter NAMM - Line6 introduced the HDs, Vox has a new model too (although it seems to be a minor upgrade, unlike the PODs), so the prices should be even lower now. Plus I'm expecting a new Boss model by the next Winter NAMM (if not sooner - I suspect the POD HDs will take a slice of their market from now until they do). If you haven't sold a GT-8 by then, you might as well hang on to it as a backup or a practice tool.
Many thanks guys, R5,500 it'll be including Practice amp, case and whammy bar. It will go on Gumtree in a couple of weeks. SAGuitar forumites will have first bite for the two week period. I don't have to sell so I'll keep it if there is no interest.
                                        Thanks again.
