I am with Chris77, I am afraid Hammeron...
There is no difference between rap, hip hop and metal, rock, indie..... they all hold equal status, no one thing sets one apart from the other, its when we start looking down on the other we become horrible clicks or groups....
there is Rap out there which blows the lid off metal groups for authenticity and talent

C'mon Norm, we'll have to redouble our efforts. At one stage there I thought we had successfully derailed this thread but it looks like the crazies has made a come back. Stick with me, we will pull it off yet.
At least, that's what Bootsy Collins would have done.

Chris 77, sorry I have to respond vehemently to this.
NEVER compare Metal to techno or rap. Techno and rap is computer generated BS. And, in my humble opinion, more evil than Metal will ever be. True Metal in its electrified and overdriven splendour is instrument driven and cuts through religion, creed and colour. It is, wether you like it or not, the most powerful modern music force today. Brazil, Israel, Egypt, Syria, Iran, China, Indonesia and Japan. It knows no boundaries. And if the Maloik is it's emblem, so be it.
I think you misunderstood chris77's post. It's not about comparing musical genres, but the fact that subcultures usually expect and sometimes insist on some sort of conformity, and the big question is, why? Why would I have to dress and behave a certain way to be considered a metalhead (as an example).

I think I'm going to have some WWBCD bumper stickers made tommorrow. Any takers?

Like I said, to me metal is just as image driven as any other music genre. I haven't got it against the music itself however. I would rather listen to metal than most other styles. I hate techno and bubblegum music almost as much as the 'artist' who are clearly in it for the money. I hold no such contempt for metal. Really I don't. But to me it doesn't matter if you live and breath Metal or just returned from the barber with a Bieber haircut. I won't judge you for either (but I will deal out a few chirps if I think you will see the funny side)

Hitler also listened to Metal. Would we find it acceptable if Nazi Germany used Maloiks as a salute? See? Point proven.

I dress normally, no excessive black or skinny jeans (how do men wear those things anyway ??? ? ) and deffinately no freaky makeup. Some people mistake my ways as being "hippyish", don't know why though, maybe I smile and throw the peace sign to much ? or dress too coulorfully :-\ . But at times I have the urge to listen to certain types of music thats makes some people cling like scared cats to the roof ?

ok - its annoyed me enough now.... >☹
people -the word is "CLIQUE'....... and NOT 'CLICK'...
"click" is what you do on the "report this post" button with your mouse and cursor...
a CLIQUE is a group or gathering of like minded people....
now back to normal programming.

Music is music...
Our left brains get in the way of understanding that and constantly strive to put everything into neat little packets and to categorise everything.

Mika, you are partial to Metal/Hard Rock, yea?
I have no doubt that you are a frikkin' brilliant guitarist. NO doubt.
But that you can even mention rap and metal in one sentence floors me.

funny enough, if you've ever tried to make any sort of electronic music you will see how difficult it is.
Some of those guys are insanely brilliant. The likes of Basement Jaxx and David Guetta come to mind. They put in just as much effort as traditional musicians without the fuss of amps and pickups. Yet they make use of thousands of virtual instruments.
Us lazy guitarists know that a Les Paul + Marshall = Rock tone.
like any genre the greats outshine the Kak.

Pete's spot on, there's like 50 sub genre's of metal on it's own and from what I've seen on most forums there's a HUGE difference of opinion from one fan boy to the next...

There is a FUNDAMENTAL difference between Rap/Hip hop and Metal and it is the guitar.

Hammeron I hate to disapoint you, yes I love I guess what you could call rock music, I have loved it throughout my shortish life..... But I also have learnt that such things as Rap, Hip Hop, Gospel, Kwaito are all equally talented and acceptable.
Take NWA, Dead Prez, Mos Def, the more serious yet still accesable Rap, its talented, its musical, its different, possibly in its time more rebelious than any Rock music.
Think bakc to the 80's or imagine with me, there are thousands of kids who like Led Zepplin, the who, Blask Sabbath.... and a elite small rebelious few latched onto early hip hop, that is or was cooler than rock, it was doing what rock did in the 50's
Aside from that Rap uses alot of musicality, and often better players than rock, Consider the Roots...... I am guessing the Rap you are exposed to is MTV Rap such as Lil wayne, and Drake..... But thats like jusging Rock on Nickleback, or Prime Circle.....
