Its a pretty out of date little motion.... that pretty much conjures up a cliche view of rock n roll...... one of appearence other than actual substance or meaning.....
Thats my take on it, I dont know what other opinions exist

Hammeron

I think it pretty much represents the BEHEMOTH that is HEAVY frikkin' METAL.
It is a hand gesture originating in the Eastern Mediteranian that was used to ward of evil. It is of the Italian "Maloich".
Ronnie James Dio remembers walking with his Italian Granma down the street when he was a lightie and the old lady throwing around the sign. She informed him that it was anti evil. And he brought it to Metal, bless his Soul. \M/

Hammeron

@@@@@@@@Mika, I cannot quite make out if you are a headbanger or not, but questioning the fact that the Maloik is not the single most definitive representation of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal ever created is, quite frankly, frikin' ridiculous.

MIKA-the-better-one

I dont question its status as the definative symbol of "hard Rock"..... I question the credabilty of "hard rock" with that as its symbol....

It just does not seem to hold much depth to it, it was created by Ronnie James because he thought it was a joke, as his Italian mother would scare use it to scare away evil spirits......

BTW I have never been a headbanger type, maybe for a week or so when i was 13 back in 2001

G-Man

I don't take it too seriously, its cool and fun to throw 'em every once in a while, you know at a metal concert or whatever. But if Rihanna can climb onto a packet or Doritos and throw them in her pop videos without any comment from the metal heads I think it's safe to say that anyone can throw 'em.

MIKA-the-better-one

If I was a metal head I would feel pretty angry rihanna hijacked my little sign.....

Maybe it means something different in Jamica? ?

Tonedef

There are more important things in life to get upset about than hand gestures.

Unless you're on the hi way and some one cuts you off and displays an accompanying hand gesture, then it's time to lock and load!!

I'm with Mika. Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, any other genre you care to name was, at one time, about the music. These days too many of them are about what uniform you want to wear. The counter-culture has become the thing that it rebelled against (which is what I think generally happens) and it's time to look for the counter-counter-culture.

I'm wary about any scene that places too much reliance on how you dress, what gestures you make etc. Well... not wary, but I think they're pretty stifling.

You mean a reversed "safe"?

Tonedef

Maloiks in the banner are dandy by me. But then I INSIST, in the interests of egalitarianism, that we get a matching silhouette of "YMCA", that gesture that represents the BEHEMOTH that is wedding receptions and community hall frikkin' sokkie!

I'd also want a bunch of people sitting on their butts and actually listening to the music.

This DOES happen. Really. I have seen it with my own eyes. I have even sat amongst these rebellious types.

Bob-Dubery

The use of the "reverse safe" in rock music predates Ronnie James Dio and, indeed, predates heavy metal.

From 1969....

Maybe he slammed his hand in the starboard pressure hatch?
