Here are the entries on the Baroque and Roll challenge . There are three groups , Advanced Intermediate and Beginner. You have 3 votes , one for each group. Voting closes on the 28th of Februaury. Well done to everyone for entering, I enjoyed all of the entries! It's great to hear other people play ?

I'm a bit bummed that no one else entered in beginners because I was keen to hear how the other guys are playing and try to gauge where I need to be steering my playing. (I'll go through the old winners when I get a chance hehe)

I tried learning to play back in 2003 for a month or 2, but I hated playing simply because of the people who tried to teach me. I deliberately abandoned the instrument and never wanted to play the thing again. Then just out of the blue one day I decided that I HAD to learn how to play my guitar that was at this stage living in a cupboard in the spare room. So I picked it again in about August / September 2009, I bought strings and a dvd and book and started learning. Then I got my first electric lat year in May. So I suppose its just shy of 18 months or so if I had to add all the time together.

Ya in the beginning I sometimes thought "why bother" but the key for me was playing everyday especially at the start. But my friends are amazed that I can hold the thing properly let alone play a couple songs, because I've never been associated with an instrument ever. It just shows that you're never too old to learn. ?

Ya, I have my last lesson of a 5-week beginner's course tomorrow.

TBH I didn't take all that much away from it, I've now been playing for just over 7 weeks and the first two weeks I was like a machine and got all the basics down by myself anyway (and of course with this here forum's help). The course was helpful though in terms of learning to read tab and music, and how to properly use a metronome and whatnot. Oh, and how to structure my excercise routine better - I was sort of getting lost doing the same things without learning a variety of holistic skills.

I still avoid chording and strumming like the plague though (deliberately as well, when I know I should put more effort into it), and it's gonna cost me in the long run. At the moment my personal style is decidely bluesy, if I chord I kill people. :-[

Just managed to get my ar$e into gear and listen through all the entries. Very impressed with playing and recording quality for all categories! Well done to everyone.

Pete's is perhaps the most true to the 'genre'? Really awesome - tight and tasty. Especially impressed with the production of the piece!
G-man :: Nicely done. Clean and melodic. Sure you're a beginner? =D
Chriss77 :: Enjoyed it, clean playing! - especially dug the rhythmic lead piece, that almost swung it for me.
FG :: Got my vote for (I), intro sealed it for me. Only crit I could offer is I hear clipping (bass guit?) occasionally in the recording? Can I ask how you did the recording?

Not sure why X-rated Bob reckons my entry is clearly illegal? It was a collaboration w/friend and I had permission to submit the piece ? But, agreed - I didn't do the melody on guitar and there was no bass guitar either...

Thanks for the comments - the two guitars were one take each (after many many practice runs) - stuck into seperate tracks and then I did a touch of *noob* trickery with fade-in's/fade-outs between the two tracks. Guitar Rig + Reaper = Fun!

The rules stipulate a time limit - 1 minute. It's not enforced to the absolute letter but the idea is that the entry should be closer in length to 1 minute than to 2. If it's 1 min and 17 seconds then a blind eye gets turned, but past 2 minutes.... look I'm not the ref so feel free to ignore me. I just think that the rules are there for good reasons and they define the bounds of acceptability. I've certainly pulled my own entries in the past if it's become clear that for whatever reason they are of questionable eligibility.

Just to clarify the Challenge rules are here http://www.guitarforum.co.za/forum-rules/gfsa-forum-rules/ . I do not even listen to the entries that are PMed to me let alone moderate, edit or censor them. If an entry transgresses the rules I let the forum members adjudicate through their vote.

*Blush* Thanks Pete - should really rtm the rules properly yeah. Truth be told I only wanted to enter the last 60secs where the two guitars start going - but thought maybe be nice to put the elctro stuff in context. Ah, well...

Woops. did not see this post. Clipping is definitely possible. I use a really really cheap USB Guitar/Computer Link that I got for R150. The nice tones are comming from using Guitar Rig. Unfortunatly no amount of software can make R150 sound like R1500

Hey FG - I also really enjoyed the bass line! I thought I noticed some clipping, because recording is something I'm busy trying to learn by trial, error more error - I've been experimenting a lot w/compression and limiting. Thought you may be using GR, grand tones! I've got the kontrol rig for plug 'n play simplicity - but your quality of recording shouldn't be depreciated, imho, certainly sounds > R150!
