Forgive me for wearing my grammar police hat for a short while here but this grammar mistake really intrigues me as it makes absolutely no sense and I see it SO often. It must be the most common mistake that I see in Facebook status updates. What does "would of" mean? What is it that causes one person to hear "would of" when another says "would've" or "would have" and not immediately think "how on earth does that sentence make sense?"
Grammar Nazi five!
You can't win. If you strike one down they will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine. ?
It is a weird one. An equivalent would be expanding "it's" to, "it us." "It us a real shame what happened to Jim." ?
Many Americans, even at college level now, are really committed to saying, "Based off of..." To which I usually think, "WTF?!"
"Based off of what I know..." Oh gard.
edit: but just to clarify. A lot of us just don't spend time thinking about this stuff and unconsciously pick up what we see written by others.
