Your most UNDERrated quitarist?

As a corollary to DingWall's thread. (Have a go, Pete! It's positive!) ? My first choice would be Lenny Kravitz - he isn't famous imo for his guit skills, but for his overall sound. But he's an excellent axe basher.

I've said it before and I'll say it again............MALCOLM YOUNG!!!!!!!!

I occasionally find myself pondering those artists who CAN play and play well, but often don't - presumably because they see their task mostly as fronting the performance.

One such is Joan Armatrading. If you've seen her live in, say, the last 20 years you'll know that she's a really, really good player. I saw her in Swaziland in the 80s and for most of the show she played fairly simple rhythm acoustic guitar, then for the encores she pulled out a strat and showed she could have saved some money by not hiring a guitar player for her backing band.

A perhaps even less obvious case is David Bowie who has substantial chops on several instruments and has, on occasion, played large chunks of guitar on his albums, but mostly lets whoever he has hired do most of the guitar work.

There's Prince too, another guy with chops on several instruments, but by now that guitar cat is out of the bag. He's also an obvious case of setting instruments aside to focus on being the front man in concert.

Jayhell

Joey Santiago - Pixies. He has he's own thing going and then when those harmonies strike, he's right there with it. Something many guitarists can't or won't do.

yeah.... just thought earlier, listening to Guns and Roses, Izzy Stradlin. Never ever mentioned as Slash was at thr front. Without his work GnR wouldn't sound that good IMO

Now that I think of it... My MOST UNDERrated guitarist is in fact...

ME

It's sad, I know...BUT It's getting better and taking a leap of faith and entering the monthly competition has really boosted my confidence... so my value (in my eyes) is going up. slowly.

I'm gonna have to weigh in again here with Brett Garsed ?

Not only is the man capable of some of the most beautiful and heartfelt phrasing:

=

Playing slide guitar in standard tuning.

But also he can tear it up over the changes like a monster:

=

And no Brett Garsed post is complete without mentioning Undoing, which has not only some of the most beautiful note selection but also the piece alternates between 6/8 and 5/8 every bar and yet it feels and flows completely naturally.

=

He is the master of hybrid picking, not only is it effortless for him but also he uses all 3 extra fingers on his right hand and it's very unusual to see someone using their pinky like he does.

And yet when he came down here the attendance for his clinics was abysmal, his Durban clinic even got cancelled because literally nobody showed up ☹

and just to finish off here's a track in which he proves it is possible to play a near endless amount of notes and still be tasteful!

=

With the equally underrated Shawn Lane (My personal hero) who though being pretty much the apex of guitar playing couldn't afford any medical care and eventually died poor and in serious pain ☹

=

Just the most unbelievable phrasing, emotion and speed 8)

Don't remember if I mentioned/posted this guy before ....... anyhow ....

Most underrated? YOU! All guitarists think they are worth poop on the instrument and beat themselves up waaay too often. So here's to YOU. Because you work hard and you kick ass.

I think Joan Armatrading is not rated as a guitar player but should be. Though when I saw her live some years ago she generally played down her own instrumental abilities, leaving most of the playing to whoever it was in her band. Right at the end of the show she strapped on an Anderson "Strat" and lit the stage up. Even on her many of her own records she's kept her guitar playing out of the lime light.

Last year I had the immense pleasure of seeing her in concert for the second time in my life (Monte Casino). She stood alone at centre stage for the entire performance and with three guitars behind her, an Ovation 6 string, Ovation 12 string and what looked like a plain white Strat. Picking up one at a time... she rocked my brains out.

The end.
