Your most UNDERrated quitarist?

As a corollary to DingWall's thread. (Have a go, Pete! It's positive!) ? My first choice would be Lenny Kravitz - he isn't famous imo for his guit skills, but for his overall sound. But he's an excellent axe basher.

Adam Jones from Tool. Definitelly the most under-rated guitarist of all time.

He just plays some riffs that are insanelly hectic to immitate. Not to mention that the rest of the band consists of bunch a geniuses. Easy to overlook Adam Jone's work in all the Tool's albums.

guidothepimmp

nuno bettencourt... classically trained, outrageous funk/ rock player

Have to agree - the only reason I did not mention him is that he is quite well renowned in many circles but yes, the guy is just a genius. His off time appreciation is insane,

Dont quite know about Nuno qualifying as under rated, he's had various signature guitars and gear since the mid 90's, constantly featured in mags. He loses points for 'more than words' thou.

No I don't think Nuno counts in this category as he is pretty highly regarded in Guitar circles. Awesome guitarist, drummer, pianist and singer - oh for just a fraction of his talent!

I, personally, can even forgive More than Words....

Buddy Whittington - this guy is amazing but is also getting quite a lot of recognition now. Also good singer.

I assume you are talking to me and also I assume you are referring to the Nuno ref?!!

But if it is BW then I was responding to Brentcpg's post.

Billy Corgan (!)

I agree with you, ShreddySmurf. Sonny Landreth is an extraordinary talented guitar player and the most underrated guitarist I know of.

Listened to Steely Dan's Can's buy a thrill and was seriously impressed by Jeff Baxter, Elliot Randall & Denny Dias (especially)

So yeah, i don't think these guys talked about much...

I enjoy Skunk Baxter's playing on those early Steely Dan albums. He's pretty handy with a pedal steel guitar as well (listen to his solo on "Fire In The Hole" on that same album). Randall's soloing on "Reeling In The Years" is his major claim to fame, and it is a great piece of playing. IMO he does pretty good work on "Kings" as well. He's a career session player (reportedly having turned down several invites to join bands). He played on a couple of other Dan albums.

Generally Can't Buy A Thrill has a lot of great guitar playing on it.

Some more underrated guitar players:
ShreddySmurf

Arjun Menon

Could probably name quite a few more but these came to mind right now
?

TS10 wrote James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins - Corgan gets the kudos, but I saw them live and Iha was the guy who did most of the melodic, haunting lines.
Mike Einziger of Incubus - the guy us a rocket scientist (literally) and his playing is so clever and cerebral but still rocks.

+1 on Iha.

I would say Einziger's fairly well recognised.

You are forgetting the artist formally known as Stratisfear and our own Conrad

Cant quite hear what you're saying, I'm getting a lot of reverb!

+1. Reeling in the years, Kings and Midnite Cruiser have been played (and played again) a few times over the past few days.
And on Sunday i went and bought a copy of Guitarist only to find a smashing interview with Randall and a celebration of Dan's debut.

Yay!

Oh yes of course, that's my mistake. Arjun Menon could hardly be considered an underrated guitarist as he is well known in guitar circles and an established guitar god already ?

Absolutely! I'll add another +1 there.

Here's another player i really feel should be widely acknowledged in the tone and taste departments

David Grissom

Psean

Joey Santiago from the Pixies. Nothing fancy, just really cool sounding little leads?
