What other guitar are you comparing it to? Humbuckers are a lot louder and have a more compressed dynamic than single-coils. Could also be a bit of microphonics (tapping on the covers and the body with the strings muted should tell you what's up with that), but microphonics don't make the smaller string sounds much louder - that sounds like too much gain (not volume... gain) and/or compression.
admittedly this is my first foray into humbuckers so all comparison is against single coils..
but just to clear some confusion the smaller strings dont sound much louder.. everything you do with the guitar is picked up and heard thru the amp.
the issue with both volume knobs is that there is hardly any diffrence between turning them to 8 or turning them to 3... the level sounds pretty similar in "loudness" so there is hardly any variable volume.. its kinda either on or off almost..
raithza - sorry, no recording facilitis otherwise i would sample it..
another way to explain this is that i can play the guitar entirely with the left hand and not strum or touch the strings qith the right hand at all.. just putting your left hand fingers on the strings to chord is already too loud... by "too loud" i dont mean the loudness out the amp hurting your ears, but the action of putting your fingers on the strings should not be at the same level of loundess as strumming the chords..
and likewise when you remove the fingers.. as they leave the string you can hear the note at the same dB as a full on strum.. so i can play a song at normal dB levels just by using the left hand fingerings without strumming
