When timing is everything

Hi all, I want to ask you a question or for some advice again , I was working on my masterpiece for the competition today putting down tracks with Reaper, when I realised just how much my timing sucks ☹ Even with a drum track I am struggling to “sync “ What I found is a) if I (listen) concentrate to hard on timing I cant play. b) If I concentrate on playing I go out of sync after a few bars.. Then I started watching the screen and found I can “sync” quite well visually (with the lines on reaper). It seems my auditory system gets overwhelmed trying to do both, but when I bring in the visual processing I cope quite well ( at least a lot better) Am I the only one with this problem ? Should I avoid the visual cues and try and develop the auditory processing ? Or should I just give in and build myself a metronome with leds ? maybe adding more ram will help ?
