Then I started watching the screen and found I can “sync” quite well visually (with the lines on reaper). It seems my auditory system gets overwhelmed trying to do both, but when I bring in the visual processing I cope quite well ( at least a lot better).
The following is all my opinion.
Your above statement sounds like dangerous ground to me. Music, IMO, should never be about anything visual, unless it is something in your mind that the music has conjured. Music is about feeling. It's about vibe. It's about emotion. The obvious answer, to me, is that recording great tracks with great timing is a result of nothing more than practice and experience. The more you do it, the better it becomes. The best musicians that I have worked with have honed their skills to the point that concentration does not even come into it. It's 100 feel and because of their hard work, it all falls into place.
When it comes to honing your timing, nothing beats playing to a metronome. The art to this is pushing to out to the periphery of your mind and ignoring it whilst keeping it's spirit - the pulse -
in mind.

Yes, absolutely. Music is a 100% auditory experience.
Cheers ?
