Baroque & Roll (formerly know as Bach Rock)
The basic idea is a Rock piece that uses 2 or more melody lines that are played on top of each other. OK this doesn't have to be all that scary, on a simple level you compose a little melody (a riff of 2 or more bars long) and then write a bass line that goes with it but has fewer notes. From there you can get all experimental if you like and start adding another melody line or make the base line go in the opposite direction to the melody or make the second melody the same as the first but start it halfway into the first melody. Mainly experiment experiment and experiment some more.

There are now three levels Beginner (B), Intermediate (I) and advanced (A) please mark your level clearly and PM it to me by Wed 23 Feb 2011

Yes like Yngwie but less boring.

See if you can inspire MoreCowBell to enter as well - Bass is also a guitar
I'll give this one a go ? Thanks Rene!
I'll give this a go. It can be any melody right?

Also, what are the skill rankings of the new classing system. I want to challenge myself and compete against the tops on this forum, at the same time, I know when my attemps will be futile if I'm versing people like Frank Gambale. Intermediate or Advanced? hmmm
So it has to be Audio? Can't just be the sheet music?

And do we have to play the instruments? I only ask because I don't have home equipment to record.. anything really, but I do have Sibelius and can always generate an audio track?

Why not collab with another member who has recording stuff? Could be a lot of fun!

Since this is a guitar forum it has to have at least one part played by you on a guitar or bass guitar

It can be any melody as long as you composed it. You decide at what skill level you wanted to be put in. If you don't know what you up against I suggest that you go through the entries of the previous challenges an hear for yourself.
mmm... seeing as I have just loaded Reaper, have never actually written anything, and pretty much suck at playing... yeah why not. I mean I have 20 days to give it a bash... so come on all ye beginners , I challenge you to at least try ( with me there you know you cant come last)

Very happy to see a new challenge up - finally sorted out my recording woes with Guitar Rig & Reaper, and many hours of RTFM'ing.

I've been working on a piece (for a DJ friend), asking me to add a 'rock guitar feel' (sic) to a electronica track. The laugh is I'm using the "YNGM" Ywngie Malmsteen Guitar Rig patch ? - very cheeeeesy!

I've layed down two guitar lines (but no bass, as the track is quite full already) that interweave melody (essentially two differing takes in the same key) - may I submit a sample from this track?

I don't know what the rules are about showing early cuts of an entry so I'm not sure. However, I'd love to hear it because I have NO idea how to get started with this, how does Baroque fit in? I was really keen to try in the beginner section but I don't quite know what kinds of things I should be trying to achieve with it. Anyone help a theory invalid? ?

If you want to know what baroque is then listen to Bach, and especially "air on a g string". Listen to the way the voices in that composition move against each other to such fab effect, and how he makes it seem to hang in the air. Marvellous.
